Is there a special type of tube required for the phase inverter in a Road King II? I recently replaced all of my preamp tubes with Groove 12AX7 tubes.

I did check all that. The gain just doesn't seem to be very powerful at all and it's a very loose sound. When I use my Ibanez overdrive pedal, it improves, but the native sound (without a pedal) really seems weak.

I recently broke out my RKII and noticed that the sound is very weak -- it sounds like it's set on "spongy", but it's not. I recently replaced all the tubes and no difference. It certainly does not sound tight at all. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

In terms of gain, I think channel 4 is dirtier than a Dual Rec....But what are you looking to play? The RKII is known for it's versatility...it's like getting a couple amps in one...But this may not be what you are looking for...

I had tried volume at high and low levels, with and without the FX loop. But I posted a response earlier in this thread that a V1 tube replacement fixed the issue. I had been away from my RKII for awhile because I was traveling and it must have gone out on me.....Thanks for the feedback...

I am saying I like the sound of the metal core and it's seems to be difficult to get the RKII to the same level of "chunk" that the metal core produces. I changed out the V1 preamp tube and it does seem better now....

I just bought a Boss Metal Core pedal and I am playing it through the clean channel (channel 1) on my RKII. I get a nice sick distortion when using my metal core; but it seems I just can't hit that same distortion level natively on my RKII head -- even on channel 4 using a variety of different...

What will happen if you use an "instrument" cable when connecting your head to your cab? What is the difference between the two? The cable connecting my head to my cab seems a bit thicker when compared to my cable used in my guitar, but otherwise the same.

I am thinking about getting a Maxon ROD880 overdrive pedal for use with my RKII head. Anyone else have this or had experience with it?

I use the GT-8 with my Road King II and it sounds good to me after you get the levels correct with the loop. But I have not really tried any other multi-effects like a GForce so I don't really have anything to compare to. I have HEARD that getting something like a G-Force will sound much better...
