    Speaker options for my Boogie...

I have a Subway blues and just got done with a Scumback speaker in it. Great tone for leads but between the amp's voicing and the speaker I thought it got to be a bit too midrangy for me. I just picked up a Weber California (think JBL) I am hoping this speaker gives me a bit more Fender vibe...

    Xotic BB preamp pedal....

The BB preamp is real smooth. Another pedal which is along the same lines is either the Mosferatu or the Blackstone Appliance pedal. All of these pedals offer smooth distortion with some compression. On most higher gain pedals the compression increases as you turn up the gain. I had a...

    celestion classic lead 80 speakers

To answer your question regarding CL80's the weight is the same and tonally between a V30 and CL80 this is what you will hear. V30 - Appears louder then the CL80, has more upper mids with less bass response, good for humbuckers. The upper treble is not as extended so the speaker isn't as...

    Replacing preamp tubes (tips?)

Ever pull a pre-amp tube thinking you put the amp in the standby mode? Man, that's a startling experience. I usually just put the amp on standby and then pull the tube, I don't like blasting the power tubes so much, I'd rather they stay warm during the pre-amp pulls.

    Fulltone OCD vs. Fat Boost

I played the Fat Boost, and to be honest it's not one of his better efforts. I own a Fulldrive and have owned the OCD...you already own a better pedal. The Fulldrive is another great option. I don't know how much grind you need but there are much better pedals then the Fat Boost.

Are V30's really that good as people say

The vintage 30 is an ok speaker and in some applications it's fine but I have found many better speakers. The upside of the V30 is they have high power handling, and are articulate. The downside is they are harsh, with a midrange spike that just drives me crazy. These speakers remind me of...

Bad to Cover the top vent of a Recto?

I would never cover the top of any amp, it doesn't matter if the amp has vents. Do this, turn on your stove and put your a foot above the flame, now, put it a foot directly to the side of it. If physics in play at all it should be hotter above the flame. If you want to cover it get a vent as...

Maverick very noisey in clean channel but not in lead?

Hello PJD, It's going to be tough to take a picture of the amp because I have returned to Guitar Center and bought a guitar from a friend instead. This being said it is not difficult to describe the problem and what you need to look for. First thing you need to do is remove the chassis. Once...

New to Boogies . . . Maverick question

Hello Ches, There is nothing wrong with the amp as it is a darker sounding amp and will not sound at all like a Fender. I owned a Maverick and the (only) reason I sold it was to buy a guitar. In the future I plan on buying another as to my ears it sounds very simliar to a Dumble. You can...

    Siemens N.O.S. EL-34

I have them in a Guytron and they sound really nice but in all honesty I'd probably buy more winged "C's" if it came down to it. The winged C is known by many as being the best current production EL-34.

    12AU7 vs. 12AX7

I may be off a little on the gain factor which is for every volt in you get X amount of gain, this being said this is what I remember from some Gerald Weber articles in the Vintage Guitar magazines. 12ax7 = 100 5751 = 70 12at7 = 60 12ay7 = 44 12au7D = 20 12au7 = 17 12au7's really kill amps, as...

    Maverick owners / mayday...sos

I just bought a used one a few weeks ago and have found the following to be true of the amp. 1. Defined bass - turn the bass control to about 1 or 2 o'clock otherwise the bass will appear indistinct. 2. Clean channel keep the mids at 10 o'clock or lower for good clean tone. 3. I never use...

    Mesa preamp tube woes...

If it's less then $3 difference it may be worth it, if more I'd pass. The JJ ECC83 (short plate) are not high in microphonics due to the short plates. If it was the Ecc803 these are known to get microphonic easier and are not recommended for high gain amps (per Eurotubes website). I do have a...

    Mesa preamp tube woes...

Hello, From what I can tell the Mesa 12ax7's look like regular Sovtek 12ax7WA tubes which IMHo are some of the worst sounding tubes made. They are all midrange with a weak low end and very poor harmonic content. I believe why all the manufacturer's use them is because they are durable without...

Maverick very noisey in clean channel but not in lead?

Problem solved. I spoke with Chris at Mesa and he suggested try lowering the reverb volume to see if the hum volume goes down. I did this and it did so with this in mind I opened up the amp and started looking at the circuit board. What I found was that of the 3 wires coming from the reverb...

Maverick very noisey in clean channel but not in lead?

Hello Everyone, New poster here. I just got a 2x12 Maverick (Wine red crocadile, killer looking) with the intention of using it as my other amp but am having a problem with the clean channel. What is happening is the clean channel has a very loud hum which does not go away when you turn the...
