    Got my ED today

Guys, ED is an abbreviation used by the general public for "Erectile Dysfunction." Go back and read this thread, including the title, with that in mind, and see if you can keep from giggling. Bob

    Express Output Transformer

Yeah, I'm constantly amazed by the mod guys who buy a classic Princeton Reverb, whose chief attraction is its distortion at low volume, and immediately replace the output tranny with a larger one in order to gain more clean headroom. Um, uh.... Bob

Mic'd Tone Tinnier Than Cabinet Sound

No, it makes sense. As you move away from the speaker, high-end is absorbed by the air. If you have a decent room to record in you can keep backing off until the insect-attracting overtones disappear! Bob

Mic'd Tone Tinnier Than Cabinet Sound

You can't just throw a mic in front of a cab to get a good sound. There's a lot of art to it. Typically, you will begin with a darkish dynamic mic (SM57) nearly against the speaker cloth and located about 2/3 of the way out from the center of one speaker in the cab. If that doesn't give you...

Express 5:25 1x10 "fuzzy sound" to no sound

The newer Expresses have a cage like this over the power tubes: Personally, I think I'd like both the "L" beam and the cage! I've quit carrying the pedal in the back of my Express because it's so tight back there is makes me uncomfortable to maneuver it around in there. Bob

    how to get protools?

I use these every day. OMF= Open Media format AAF=Advanced Authoring Format MXF=Materials Exchange Format These are all file formats that allow you to exchange between workstations and houses and allow you to encapsulate both the media (.wavs, etc.) in the location pointers into one file for...

FS: 1978 Gibson Les Paul Standard

Hi! Post it over on the Les Paul forum. There are lots of guys over there who love that guitar. Bob

    Fender Super Sonic 22

You know, i was never able to get a clean enough lead sound out of the lead channel for my tastes. On first blush they seem really cool but the longer you mess with them the more "modern" they seem. By the way, the Mustang II has a pretty good model of the Super Sonic 22 onboard... Bob

    Express footswitch cable length?

Yeah, push-on, push-off foot switches. The jacks in the back allow you to add on/off foot switches that simply close the loop between the tip and ring on a cable. Bob

    Express footswitch cable length?

That sounds like the perfect application for contact closures via the jacks on the back. You might ask Mesa how long a run is possible in that application. Bob

Joe bonamassa does a good live show

He's posting over on the Les Paul Forum these days while on tour in Australia. The main topic is how he's having to deal with the airlines when flying with his '59 Les Paul. Bob

Thanks for that. I've got it on file now. Bob

    Newbie Questions

One tip I can recommend is to switch off the contour on the gained-up channel and see if it isn't much smoother. If it is smooth but is too dark with the contour off, turn the contour knob all the way left, switch it back in, and slowly add contour to brighten it up again. Another tip is to...

    Footswitch issues

One in a store started stooging around on me. I unplugged and plug up the footswitch and it was still intermittent. I traced the cord back to the chassis and gave the plug at that end a push. It moved, so I could tell that it hadn't been seated too well. I unplugged and re-plugged it and...

    Post removed.

A recent trend is to use an SM57 and a Royer R-121 ribbon. By mixing between the two you can get a very lifelike sound. It ain't cheap, but it sounds nice. Bob

    What are you guys reading??

Re-reading We Were Soldiers Once, and Young. I took it out to lend to a friend and got hooked. Rats.

Strange new sound from my 5:25 with 10"

Another thing to try is to put a screwdriver into the slot of each of the speaker screws and put slight pressure on the screw while playing the note that excites the sound and see if that kills it. If so, gently tighten the screw. Also try the same with the back panel screws. Bob

Express 5:25 for bedroom amp. 10" vs 12"

I think that is going to be an ear call for you. I had both to compare. I even brought in my wife and a son to compare the two. My wife preferred the sound of the 10". My son and I preferred the sound of the 12". To my ears, the 10" version was very present, sounded like a smaller amp, and...

Help with some old slide guitars...

There's a Maggie like yours (except white knobs) on Fleabay right now, HERE. I had one of the single knob Maggies back in the '70s. Right now I'm playing a Supro and a Gretsch. Have fun! Bob

5:50 settings to get close to a "Tweed" sound?

Many of the blackfaces and the silverfaces had to be cranked up until no human could stay in the room with them to get a decent distortion. The tweeds, however, were less efficient and had wide-band preamps so that they broke up earlier. There were more Class-A designs in the tweeds than in...
