5:25 Speaker Swap - Cannabis Rex

I put one in V2, which is actually the first tube, and in V4, which is the PI. Mainly I did it for Burn. Burn is a lot more useable now and actually pleasant to use. Before it sounded overly compressed and the chord definition was terrible on higher gain settings. It's really good now though...

5:25 Speaker Swap - Cannabis Rex

My 5:25 never really struck me as really British, despite the EL84's. When I think British, I think of the very upper mid Marshall sound. The CR just made my amp sound a little mellower. I had a C12K in before which wasn't too bad. Distorted a little easier and had more mids, IIRC. The main...

5:25 Speaker Swap - Cannabis Rex

You can definitely do it safely by plugging it into the 8 ohm tap, but it won't be an accurate assessment of the CR. It will change the impedance your power tubes see and effect the damping of the speaker. It won't be the same sound as a proper impedance match.

5:25 Speaker Swap - Cannabis Rex

I use a Cannabis Rex as well. Everyone talks about what a dark speaker it is, but with this amp I feel like it makes it sound NORMAL. Pretty much what Nomad has been reporting. It's a cheap speaker and sounds amazing. Get it.

    New Tubes...Yay or Nay?

Sure thing, man. Bottom line is, if you don't know the design of an amps phase inverter, best case scenario is temporary perfect balance in the power section which sounds boring anyway.

    New Tubes...Yay or Nay?

Although you already bought the tubes, for future reference, don't bother with a balanced phase inverter in a guitar amp ever. For all you know, the circuit might have been designed to be imbalanced, especially if it's a long tail PI. Some of the most famous amps purposefully imbalance the PI to...

    Express 5:25 + Eminence Governor + ohmage mis-match

I have an 8 ohm Cannabis Rex. When I use it with my 4 ohm tap the amp sounds a lot more compressed and has a lot more treble. The opposite of your effect, oddly enough. No experience with the Governor though. Maybe it's just a dull speaker. Might wanna try it in a different room with a different...

    Express 5:25 + Eminence Governor + ohmage mis-match

Definitely try it again. When you double the speaker impedance, that doubling reflects over to your output transformer's primary. There is now less current going through the power tubes and more voltage being developed. The speaker is also dampened differently. All these weird technical terms...

    Well this looks cool.

Express 50/5 mode switching mod QUESTION

I don't know if the Boss will cover it. Maybe Boogie can answer. Also, Boogie, thanks for clearing that up! Current tube lineup is V1: Tung Sol 12AX7 V2: EH 12AY7 V3:Tung Sol 12AX7 V4: EH 12AY7 V5: Nothing Power: Sovtek EL84's Despite the much lower gain, the thing sounds amazing.

Express 50/5 mode switching mod QUESTION

That's really surprising coming from a company that voids your warranty if you don't use their tubes. Weird. I actually just recorded a bunch of songs in which I had the same settings for blues and burn and just toggled between the two for clean and dirty. Blues is a really cool mode. A lot of...

Express 50/5 mode switching mod QUESTION

I can't imagine it would be a bad idea due to circuitry issues. If they put a toggle on the chassis, making a footswitch for it wouldn't be a big deal. Only thing I'd be worried about is taking it to a crappy tech and having him void the warranty.

Express 50/5 mode switching mod QUESTION

It would be easier and more worth it IMO to just buy or build a boost pedal and use it with the blues channel. Blues is a little thicker and might be more prone to flubbiness at higher gain, but I think it could be fine, especially if the pedal has a tone knob. OTOH you could use the burn...

    Wow!! Just WoWWW!!!

I've only tried the TA-30 a few times. I like its tone better. It's slightly thicker IIRC especially on Hi 1. The only thing is that people are constantly complaining that it's noisy.

    New 5:50

Had my 5:25 for about 3 years now. Haven't even changed the power tubes. It's solid.

    Oops!! 5:25 plugged into 220V

I'm no expert but I would imagine everything is toast. Even if it was only for 1 second, audio equipment relies on frequencies far smaller than that. The capacitors take less than a second to charge, and trying to charge them at twice the rated voltage is... bad. You can go ahead and try it on...

    Eminence Cannabis Rex

I have one in my Thiele. The only other thing I have to compare it to was a Jensen C12K in the same cab. Had it in there for years now. It's a keeper for sure. I feel like the 5:25 can be a little bright and brash, especially with the EL84's, but the CR calms it down a good amount.

    A FENDER - MESA/Boogie Express Conundrum

I don't know how keen you would be on this idea, but maybe you could take it to a tech and have him mod it so that it's cathode biased instead. Judging from the schematics, it's a mod that's doable by any competent tech. The advantages would be that the amp wouldn't need to be biased ever again...

Express 5:50 (not +) - will it work out?

You might even be able to get away with one channel. Use the contour to scoop the mids for the heavier rhythm sound, turn the contour off to get the mids back. I find my 5:25 amazing at cutting through a live mix.

    Doubling Guitar Tracks

One really good way of doing it particularly for metal is to record two takes directly into the DAW and then reamp them. That way you can run each take through multiple rigs and get a really complex tone.
