EVM-12L 200 Watt Classic Or 300 Watt Black Label - Worth It?

Though I wouldn't agree with Reckless, it is a very special speaker. I can't think of another guitar speaker that can match the low end response of the EV. It makes a Thiele cab sound like a 4x12. I use a very small rig live, an F30 and a EV loaded Thiele. At volume it sounds as big as Kirstie...

Question about LSS head with a non LSS cab

The LSS can do a lot of different things well through different cabs. I started out with a combo that ended up in a head cab that gets plugged into just about everything. I really dig the LSS with a closed back 2x12". I'm toying with the idea of ordering a head cab for my 5:25 too.

Soldano HR50 vs. Mesa Single recto

Metaphorically speaking, you couldn't be more right. If I'm not mistaken, the Avenger is a 100 watt HR50 with the depth mod. I even think it was intended to replace the 50 at one point.

Soldano HR50 vs. Mesa Single recto

A DR and a HR50 are very different animals. In my opinion neither can come close to the other's tone. HR50s have mids and upper-mids like modded Marshalls. It's notably a different voicing from the DR.

JJ KT77's in a Stiletto Ace combo

I put them in my Ace (phonetically this is a disgusting thing to say). They fit but I had the whole chassis out when I did it. I needed to swap preamp tubes and I wasn't about to bust my knuckles up in there. Personally, I don't like the tubes too much. They seem to add to the brightness issue...

What cabs can I use with an Express 5:25 Head?

Theoretically, any one of them. As long as the cab isn't super low power, and none of the stock Mesa cabs are, you should be fine. It's safe to run the 5:25 at 16Ω all the way down to 4Ω. You should be fine with anything. The only thing I worry about with cabs matching up is impedance and...

    Clean mesa stuff

JC120's are solid state and in my experience, have a very different nature when compared to tube amps with great cleans. Typically, tube cleans have a different 'spongyness' and more harmonic distortion. They're both cooking with very different ingredients (Roland/MOSFET, Mesa/Tubes). I know...

Cab size for LSS 1x12 combo: Has it always been the same ?

I got mine when they first shipped and it was standard in the 23". It now lives in a short head chassis. I'd assume if there were 27"s early on they were one offs or prototypes.

    LSS discontinued?

I've toured with my LSS a bit this year and so far no issues. It's an early one too. I don't remember but I think it's serial number is in the 60's. I've had it since they first shipped and it's never given me a problem. I do like to retube about every year and a half so maybe I err on the side...

    My first mesa amp

The 5:25 will only take EL84s. EL34s are very different in size, shape, and sound. They won't fit into EL84 sockets but they fit into 6L6 and other sockets. But you won't want to go sticking them into 6L6 sockets unless your amp can switch between both (like a Lonestar Classic). But the 5:25 is...

    Anyone A/B'd Recto and Orange 4 x 12's

A little over a year ago I was told that Celestion moved production of their V30s (and others) to China, yet the Mesa versions were still made in the UK. Whatever difference that makes is not clear to me other than maybe some lead in the children's toys here and there.

LoneSar Classic (Old Style) vs LoneStar Special

I'm alone in this but I would keep the LSS. I think you've got power & versatility covered with the Triamp. The LSS is less versatile the the Classic for sure, but personally I dig the LSS's vibe more. But I tend to like EL84's more than anything else.

    OD Pedal for F30

I've been using a Keeley TS9 in front of my F-30 and I'm completely in love with it. I always really dug the amp but now it really seems 'complete' to me. It's worth noting that I use a EV loaded Thiele with the F-30 head. The Tube Screamer might be too nasal for the open combo setup.

    LSS Chassis Bolt

It seems "the bolt" comes into question every few weeks or so. I've noticed it on all of the smaller chassis amps I've owned from Mesa. I was told it's there to reduce vibration between the head and cabinet. But I think it's main purpose is to prevent it during transport, more than during a gig...

    5.25 Express - 10 inch? or 12 inch? Whaaaaaat?

I can dig the frustration. I got the 10 when it came out and like anything I buy these days a bigger better version is always 6 months behind. But I look at it this way, it's almost as small as a head version and a wider body extension cab sounds even better than a 1x12 combo. In the long run it...

Mark IV Owners - What cab/speakers are you using?

+1 on the Thiele. I'm not a MKIV guy but you've already got two big guns, and the short head would sit on the Thiele like the dot on an i. Lastly, the EV loaded Thiele is a sound to be reckoned with. You might get hooked if you haven't used one already.

I think it would work out with a LSS. You can knock it down to 5 watts, throw on the Thicker switch and things get pretty obese. And the LSS is heroic with P-90s and single coils. I love it. But it is a different voicing. I've used both amps a little bit and I like them both but for very...

    LSS & Gibson DC Pro

I think burstbuckers might be brighter and a bit more articulate. I know I've heard them but I've never owned a set and my memory is neither bright nor articulate. That could be cool with the LSS. But you don't really want anything too twangy right?

    LSS & Gibson DC Pro

I have a pair of LP DC Standards and a LSS. One of the LPs has Duncan P90's and the other Joe Barden Two Tones. I'm not sure about the DC Pro but my guitars have chambered bodies and needed brighter pickups to sound 'right' to my ears. So I swapped out pickups and now both of them scream with my...

    Speakers are a funny thing

I'm always impressed retuning to the stock speakers after swapping them out for a while. I find myself remembering: "oh yeah, they know how to make it sound right in the first place." That being said, I'm dying to try out a gold. Hehe.
