    identifying a 12ax7

Photos will help immensely. National re-branded everything. Your "Great Britain" tube may actually have been made there. Or, even more likely, it was made in an Eastern Bloc country during the cold war, and painted with "Great Britain" to bypass import restrictions. Photos will tell. - Thom

    MESA PREAMP TUBE ID.

Those are Ei (Yugoslavian). I realize this is an old thread. But I haven't looked here in quite a while. - Thom

    Did Mesa Discontinue 20/20 Power?

True! Kind of like a bad relationship... :( - T

    Did Mesa Discontinue 20/20 Power?

Yes - I think I would rather start from scratch, though modding the old 50/50 is a fine idea too (thanks Triaxstasy). I might have time for a project like that... sometime after my 4 year old graduates from college  Cheers! - T

    Did Mesa Discontinue 20/20 Power?

Interesting idea. That sounds sort of like the Groove Tubes "Dual" amp format, though the Dual can be set up to run stereo, or as mono, 60-75 watts (depending on output tube choice). Of course, you could use the Mesa 50/50, and just run it in mono - which I'm sure you've already considered...

    Did Mesa Discontinue 20/20 Power?

You're going to have to revise that impression. I've had a 20/20 for years, and dearly enjoy it. Only one rack space portability, and more modest volume - works perfectly for current club conditions. There are many posts here where players state their satisfaction with the 20/20. - Thom

    Did Mesa Discontinue 20/20 Power?

I just realized the stereo 20/20 power amp is no longer mentioned in Mesa/Boogie's product listings, and is sold out of their on-line store. Anyone know the back story on this? - Thom

Yes. But I don't use them consistently anyway  - Thom

    Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7

Hi Crane! Yes, the ramblings are indelible, it seems. Funny thing, though - the New Sensor "Tung-Sol" that I first purchased, way back when, seem to fit your description of the '09 batch that you favor. Cheers! - T

    Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7

Wow!! This thread has been alive for four and a half years. Although I stand behind what I said at that time, there may have been production changes in the ensuing time, so I can't guarantee that the current-production "Tung-Sol" 12AX7 still sounds the same. Carry on, then... - Thom

    6L6 tube shapes

Since we're throwing around fancy power tube numbers, today I installed a wonderful pair of Swedish Standard 5S2D tubes in my Carr Slant 6V, and thoroughly enjoyed their liveliness and clarity. Played for hours! Maybe I should have put in my Bendix 5992 in the other pair, but I couldn't kick...

Such a wealth of information! Thanks, Mav! Have you ever used a Tung-Sol 6098? 376 v DC? Yowzzzzzaa! - Thom

    6L6 tube shapes

My turn... Vintage 6L6G (bulbous "ST" = shouldered tube style; I never thought they look anything like a Coke bottle) will flare up and die in any Mesa/Boogie amp that you put them in. Their max plate voltage is rated at 360V, not the 500+ volts you get from these amps. The only ST-shaped 6L6...

    Hammond 12ax7?

The description sounds like a GE to me, too. If it is a long-plate, it will have two small circular holes on the sides of the plates, near the center (lengthwise). Those long-plate GE 12AX7 have rounded-off highs, and are useful for taming treble. Short-plate GE 12AX7 will have a single...

Late to the party... but I'll provide a distant echo of Mav's eloquent synopsis

    Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7

I agree with the spirit of what you are saying, and I hate when people refer to New Sensor products as "re-issues" They have nothing to do with the original. But you have gone beyond where I would draw the line, in my critique. New Sensor's tubes may look the same to you, but they do not all...

    RCA ecc83

You'll be able to tell a difference if you use it in your phase inverter. That's the most sure position that won't exhibit microphonics, but there may be others, between V1 and the PI. Just try your RCA there, and let your ears (and sense of touch) tell you all you need to know about whether...

    Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7

I suppose it would eventually out-last the non gold-plated pins. I use tubes that are 60+ years old, and they don't have gold-plated pins. If there is slight pin corrosion, it is usually easily cleaned. But if you plan on keeping these tubes on the shelf, in a very humid area, near...

    Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7

Winged "C" 6L6GC are an excellent choice for new-production. Get 'em! As for the $50 Russian 5U3C - I'm not so sure, as I've never tried that. I do know that you can get the best of NOS 5U4G (such as my favorite, Ken-Rad) for that price. Personally, I'd pass on that "deal" and go for any...
