    Mark V Tube Thread

heh. he recommended the Tung-Sol reissue for V1 to me last summer. with it in V1, i swapped tubes in and out of V2 and V3 for months trying to get a smoother, less harsh sound (including the T-S in V3, which was too bright), but only recently found out that the key was taking that T-S out of...

FS: Mesa/Boogie 20/20 Tube Power Amp

Mesa/Boogie 20:20 Tube Power Amp. One rack-space stereo power amp. Two pairs of EL-84 power tubes wired for "Dyna-Watt power" sounds way louder than you'd expect from only 20 watts--it's plenty enough for all but the largest rooms, and it gets a really sweet tone when turned up. In...

FYI I've found the ultimate tube for V1 of the Mark V

i did this recently with a Mullad Reissue 12AX7. it likewise has a hair less gain than most 12AX7s. i had tried it in V3 but didn't like it; i play high-gain sounds and the lower gain wasn't enough gain for me. but in V1, it sounds great. the amp lost the sharp high-end i was getting and now...

FS: Triaxis V2.0 non-phat mod, GT tubes

i am located in the US, in the southeast. i would ship to Canada if the buyer paid the difference between that and the shipping costs within the US.

    Way TOOOOOOOO Much Treble

a more-than-small volume drop when switching from Edge or Crunch to Mk I, in my experience, is normal. with my settings, if i have the overall Master Vol on 9 o'clock when using the Crunch channel, i have to turn the master up to 10 o'clock to make Mk I sound the same loudness.

Help!! I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH TOO MUCH ICE PICK TREBLE

i hear ya. i went through exactly the same thing with mine. i almost sold it. the breakthrough for me was using the graphic EQ instead of the preset EQ (and getting the graphic EQ not to be way too boomy and flubby). i also swapped the preamp tubes--i have a Tung Sol reissue in v1 and others...

Help!! I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH TOO MUCH ICE PICK TREBLE

i had this problem with my Mark V for the longest time, mostly on Channel 3. i still haven't fully conquered it, but i've gotten it much better. i agree with a lot of the advice you've gotten so far: -get rid of the V30s, especially if they are not in an oversized cab. the V30s have a large...

    SOLD! (Boogie Black Shadow Speaker)

Sold! For Sale: Boogie Black Shadow MC90 12" speaker, made by Celestion. 8 ohms. Was stock in a DC-5 combo so it has normal minor scuffs on the metal, but it is in very good used condition. Here's a pic: $49 plus shipping (which in the U.S. would be $20). Boogie sells these new for $135...

FS: Triaxis V2.0 non-phat mod, GT tubes

For Sale: Triaxis preamp. It's V2.0 but before the Phat Mod that changed the Rectifier mode. It's loaded with Groove Tubes that aren't new but still have plenty of life in them. In very good used condition--some rack rash and rack-screw marks, but works great. Here are some pics: $949...

Darkening the voicing of the 50/50

glad you got it sorted, but i will add a couple things in case anyone is interested. i got a nicely dark tone from my 50/50, although smooth rather than grindy, using russian 5881s instead of 6L6s. they were less bright, so the mids and lows came through better. the Deep Mod certainly helps...

    Harsh tone,

i've been having the exact same problem--no matter what, it's fizzy and harsh, not smooth and fat. i've had the amp 5 months, so it should be well broken-in. i've tried pretty much everything. different settings: Treble up and Gain down; Gain up and Treble down (i play pretty high-gain...

Tried a Mark V and hated it...

cool--no problem. i have to run the treble high and the Bright switch on because channel 3 way too loose for tight high-gain rhythm sounds if i don't. i have the Presence completely off to try to cut the fizz (it doesn't). so i would love an EQ tweak that would let me use a bit more Presence...

Tried a Mark V and hated it...

yes--please give more details. i'm still getting way too much fizz on channel 3, and nothing i've tried will dial it back. when you say 'high frequency slider to zero,' do you mean it was at the middle line (no boost or cut) or at the bottom line? and smd24 fan, you mentioned compensating for...

Anyone mix 6l6s and 5881's...or am I nuts?

i haven't mixed in my Mark V (the newest manual says not to), but i've been running all 5881s in it for a few months now, an older set with some miles on them from my 50/50. IIRC, they smoothed out some of the harshness i was getting in high gain sounds. but it's been so long since i swapped...
