    Retubed the Stiletto

If you want to try something a bit different you can also put a JAN Philips 5751 in either V1 or V2. A slightly lower gain tube than 12ax7 however I love what this tube does for my Stiletto Ace head - especially in Crunch mode - it removes some of the brightness and allows me to turn the treble...

    Will I like a Roadster

I'm not familiar with the Roadster but I have to agree with you on the Stiletto - although a deceptively simple amp there's a huge range of tones in there, starting with the Marshall classic-rock-on-steroids type of sound. I waver back and forth between my Mark IV and my Stiletto - they both...

Sound intermittently cutting out on my new Stiletto Ace?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I don't think it's the effects loop problem (unfortunately, since that seems as if it would be a straightforward thing to fix). When I flip the rear switch to hard bypass, there is no difference. I never have the loop on and nothing connected since I have...

Sound intermittently cutting out on my new Stiletto Ace?

Bought a new Stiletto Ace head a few months ago and love it. However, recently the sound has started cutting out intermittently. It usually cuts completely out and sometimes I can hear the music coming through faintly when it happens. I tried changing tubes etc and no difference. I have...

Question about tweed power on Mark IV

Just purchased a used Mark IV combo and still getting it "dialed in". Is it normal that when I switch from full power to tweed power the volume gradually falls - i.e. initially it's the same and then it gradually falls so that I have to turn the master volume dial from around 2 to 4 in order to...

Hum through effects loop of Mark IV combo

Just picked up a used Mark IV combo and man are there a ton of sounds to be found in this beauty! Wonderful cleans, under-rated crunch in channel 2 and beautiful soaring high gain in channel 3. Been messing with different tubes, extension cabs etc. I like to mess around with effects too and...

Tung-Sol reissue 12ax7 in V1 of Mark IV?

I agree they sound great - just wish they could fit into V1 of the Mark IV...using them in V2-V4...

    stiletto or lonestar?

I went through a similar decision a few months ago and ended up with a Stiletto Ace head as I was really looking for a hard rock / classic metal type of sound - sort of like a "better" version of a contemporary Marshall amp. The Lone Star has absolutely stunning cleans and great blues tone but...

JJ's or GT pre amp tubes for Stiletto Ace

I've had nice results with a JAN-Philips 5751 in V1, Tung-Sol 12ax7 in V2 and wing =c= EL34 power tubes. Of all the combos I've tried this seems to have been the best in taming the at-times shrill highs of my ace. Not hearing a huge difference with subbing out the stock tubes in V3-V5. Just...

    reverb for stiletto deuce?

I have the holy grail plus from their newer line. I believe it has an additional mode compared to the regular holy grail but the main reason I got it is because of its smaller footprint. Sounds quite nice - not as good as an onboard spring but not too bad - and best of all it's true bypass so...

Tung-Sol reissue 12ax7 in V1 of Mark IV?

Yes I've used them in my Stiletto Ace with no problem but the protective housing for the tubes in that amp clearly accomodates it. I'm specifically speaking of V1 in the Mark IV - just doesn't seem to fit because the housing is narrow and the TungSol seems to be a particurlarly thick/wide tube...

Tung-Sol reissue 12ax7 in V1 of Mark IV?

Hey all, Just picked up a used Mark IV combo and have been spending some time trying to get it "dialed in". A real tweaker's amp! Anyways, I've read good things about a Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7 in V1 of this amp and I think that may give me just the right amount of growl to the OD in R2 channel...

Looking for some info on 1985 Boogie Mark III

Thanks for the info. I would be trading a Fuchs Lucky 7 head and $400 canadian. His amp is a combo with the EV speaker and simulclass. Does this sound reasonable to you or is it too much to spend? The Lucky 7 is nice, just not my type of sound - I'd love to be able to sell it or trade it plus...

Looking for some info on 1985 Boogie Mark III

I may have an opportunity to trade one of my amps for a 1985 Boogie Mark III. From the pics it looks like a version without an on-board 5-band equalizer. Wondering if anyone can give me info on this amp - mostly how it would likely compare to a current Mark IV in terms of sound quality - as...

    KT77 Bias Question

I'm under the impression that KT77 is a drop-in replacement for EL34, meaning there should be no problem in an Ace. Lots of people on here have stated their fondness for this particular tube in the Stiletto series. But as others have stated, best to check with your dealer if you're uneasy...

    Help with my Stiletto Ace

Changing tubes is easy, especially with a fixed bias amp like a Mesa - just make sure it's turned off and the tubes are cold - pull out the old ones and put in the new ones. As for which tubes to change, I would suggest V1 and the power tubes - those make the biggest difference IMO.

    Help with my Stiletto Ace

I found this initially but a tube change worked wonders. Currently running a JAN 5751 in V1, TungSol 12ax7 in V2, stock in V3 and V4, Sovtek 12ax7LPS in V5, stock rectifier and SED =C= EL34 power tubes. Makes a huge difference. The 5751 is a bit lower gain however really takes the piercing...
