Pedals or Processor??? Age old question!

I prefer pedals. I can't seem to gel with rack processors.

How much compressor can change clean tone?

Compressors can do a lot to clean tone, including rackmount compressors. I believe that compression is a larger factor in that slick polished '80s clean tone than chorus.

    What is your favorite modulation

My favourite is chorus, but I use an Electro Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress Flanger pedal to get the effect. It has beaten every chorus unit (pedal, rack, and amp) that I have ever used.

Anybody try a Rackmount eq with the Recto?

I'd like to hear a Recto with 245Hz scooped out in the effects loop.

Getting the most (and Marshally-sound from R2 channel MarkIV

Hi, I am generally satisfied with the Rhythm 2 channel of my MarkIV. I can get useable tones from it, but ideally I would like it to have more of that Marshall Plexi BARK type of sound, or at least like the Electradyne. I gotta say that the Electradyne NAILS that Plexi Bark sound! At the...

Darkening the voicing of the 50/50

Thanks very much guys! Your advice has served me well, cheers 8) . For starters I have now a quartet of JJ 6L6 poweramp valves in the 50/50. I first tested them in the MarkIV and they brought that slight darkness and thud that I wanted. Secondly, as suggested, I've put both presence controls...

    Paired tubes in a 50/50

Is it possible to mix matched pairs in the 50/50? e.g. a pair of EL34s and a pair of 6L6s?

Darkening the voicing of the 50/50

Hi, I have a Mesa/Boogie 50/50 poweramp. I'm aiming for a really dark, low-growly type of sound. Grinding, roaring, really demonic low growl. I have tried lowering the presence and using external parametric EQ, but they have not worked. In fact using parametric EQ just makes it worse. The...

    KT77 valves for 50/50 poweramp?

Hi, I have a Mesa/Boogie 50/50 poweramp. At the moment the stock str420 valves aren't doing it for me. I'm running the amp into a modified speaker cabinet that has two 12" 200 watt ElectroVoice speakers (12S I think?). I'm aiming for a really dark, low-growly type of sound. Grinding, roaring...

Have a 50/50, but what tubes to use?

Mesa/Boogie STR440s should work fine. I have them in my MarkIV and they sound fantastic. STR440 is the Mesa/Boogie-tested Ruby Tubes 6L6, probably one of the best of the Chinese poweramp valves. Otherwise you could use the STR450 which is the Mesa/Boogie-tested Svetlana Electron Devices 6L6.

    2:90 vs Recto 2:100

Basically what it boils down to, is that I like the sound of an older Dual Rectifier poweramp. Because that particular cab WILL be running a stereo effect, I want that sound, or similar, in stereo. Also I need something that is smaller than an amp head, and 2U rackspace is a perfect size. It's...

    2:90 vs Recto 2:100

Sorry folks, I should have described some more things about the situation. My Mesa/Boogie MarkIV is my main amp, which apart from some effects pedals out front, will run the 'dry' unaffected signal. The Satellite Send jack of my MarkIV will go to a stereo poweramp, to run a stereo 4x12 cab...

    2:90 vs Recto 2:100

Hi, I'm interested in getting a stereo poweramp, particularly a Mesa/Boogie. The Strategy 400/500 & 295 are out of my league, so I won't concern myself with them. How does the 2:90 compare to the Recto 2:100? Both have a Modern mode, so I guess this is similar the the Modern/Red mode on...

    John Petrucci's distorted chorus tone?

    Thanks for that. 8) I thought the 2290 was just a delay/reverb unit, and the 1210 a dedicated chorus/flanger?

Anybody done a US->UK voltage conversion?

I'm too scared to get the transformer in mine changed, so I just put up with using the step-down transformer. It's fine for me.

What is the white amp head you have there, sitting on top of the Marshall 4x12 cabinet?

    James Hetfield's 2008 rig pix

He usually uses a Rect-O-Verb combo or Trem-O-Verb combo to practice, warm up, try parts out, or just goof around on in the control room. Those Metallica ringtone clips, where James plays the guitar- would have been either the Rect-O-Verb combo or Trem-O-Verb combo. You can tell due to the...

    John Petrucci's distorted chorus tone?

What does/has John Petrucci use/d for chorus with high gain tones? Especially rhythm tones? Does he use his Eventide in the effects loop, in stereo? Or a chorus pedal set fully wet on one amp and run a dry amp on the other side? Or what? Please post if you know, or have any kind of idea, thanks.

OT: TECH21 California pedal.A good Mesa Boogie tone attempt?

Absolutely correct. I had a Tech21 Sansamp GT-2 pedal, and it sounded horrible when used into an amp. Directly into a mixer, well....it was better. I've heard this "California" emulation on a guitar magazine CD of the pedal you spoke of (TRI-AC?). It did sound close to the early MarkI/II...
