Whats the deal w/ mark 3s?

That's right...MkIII's suck. I'm happy to take yours off your hands for $200. Where shall I Paypal? There's nothing more gratifying than to hear another guitarist come up to you after a gig and say, "that sounded fantastic! Never knew one of those old Boogies could sound like that."...

    Pedals for that "secret sound"...

It's not always a modulation effect that makes the big difference, for me. My fav is the Xotic EP-Booster. It does some magic sh** to my signal that can't be duplicated...and I've looked for over 30 years. That plus a Keeley TS-9 or K'zoo and daaa-yam!! Now, there are other secrets to the...

WTB: Short Head Rack Mount Kit or Road Case

I have a rack kit that I might be willing to part with. It's not necessarily heavy, so shipping shouldn't be too big of an issue.

How do i know if my Mark iii is iiic+ modded?

Agreed. Even after playing mine for many, many years, it wasn't until I started over from scratch that I discovered the real potential of this amp. Then, I pulled all preamp tubes and started on a NOS craze that eventually solved the brittle nature. And only very recently, after I swapped the...

How do i know if my Mark iii is iiic+ modded?

If BB says it's stock, it's stock. Is this a late blue stripe? Looks like it's pushing triode mode on the power stage. Was it abroad with that multi-tap export tranny? Date codes on the components state '89 and '90, so it could be a blue stripe, but that's clearly in green stripe date territory...

How do i know if my Mark iii is iiic+ modded?

Post up a photo of the inside of the amp so we can see the PC boards.

Clean boost / EQ for my Express 5:25 1x12

Simple. Xotic EP-Booster. Pure bliss for any Boogie and can add a little treble to make leads step out.

    anyone ever use a atturator?

I have a Marshall PowerBrake available, if you're interested.

    Let's talk Speakers

You could put almost any speaker in there without fear of over driving it. But I'd opt for something that gets pushed at lower power to find their sweet spot when the power stage clips. Greenbacks come to mind. And a closed back cab would keep bass tight. Ultimately, you know I'm always leaning...

    Carlos Santana tone in Zebop

That's the key. Pushing the channel to clip will require enduring the SPL, so consider adding more speakers to the equation. A 2x12 or 4x12 will spread that power out and keep one driver from becoming ice-picky or overly ragged. And if you have EVs, that effect is really unpleasant, to me. Lower...

Different Mark 3 models, which is best/worst? -Possible mods

Unless I'm playing outdoors and need the added power, class A mode is all I use anymore.

Are you still reading, Rob? Get out there and go buy your MkIII!! :D

    New MARK III owner here!!

Or, change preamp tube V3 to a NOS RFT and get a similar result without modding the amp. That's a hellova score, MrSmitty. Congrats...you're gonna like the way you Boogie.

    MkIII was HOT...maybe too hot

The SED Winged C 6L6s are in my Twin and are very VERY good power tubes. And since I've been steadily (read: weekly) gigging this over the past 5 years...reliably...there's no sense in taking any chances. It's a worthy investment. Though I'm reasonably proficient at this stuff, I'll take the...

    MkIII was HOT...maybe too hot

*sigh* great... Sounds like I should buy another pair of EL34s and keep 'em on hand. Thanks for the feedback guys. It's good to bounce this stuff off of the group here even when the solution is painfully obvious. Meh, not too bad this time. 8)

    Anybody use a Power Soak?

The old Power Soaks did seem to have a sweet spot that you didn't dare stray beyond in fear of the wet blanket effect. Enter the Marshall Power Brake. In my application, it was completely wet blanket-free. But after my "revoicing" work, the master is no longer between 5-7, so the attenuation is...

    MkIII was HOT...maybe too hot

Yeah, it does run fine now, but I'm afraid it's a tell-tale sign of needing a re-cap. Heck, it's 23 years old...it's probably time. Anyone know where I can buy 220uF 300V axial electrolytics to Mesa spec?

    MkIII was HOT...maybe too hot

We had a private party gig last Saturday. A nice family party out in the country...swimming pool, pretty girls in bikinis, tons of beer and good food...good times. The stage was the entrance to their barn, so we had the building as shelter if, err, when it rained. But before the showers started...

Rewiring a Mark III's outside sockets from triode to pentode

It's not a complicated change to the circuit, but if you aren't solidly experienced and confident in those skills, leave it for a professional. You can even create a switchable mode option to trade between triode and pentode, like the MkIV does. But again, it takes proficiency in electronics. In...

Buy a Mesa and we'll throw in a Marshall for free!

These revelations aren't exclusive to the Recto family. They seem to be hiding in the Mark series too...you just have to go looking for them. Congrats on the discovery!
