second hand Mark V - worth giving to a tech for a 'service'

So just change the power amp tubes then. I know what you mean about if it ain't broke, I just dont know it its 100% or not. I'll get the 6L6s and see what if any difference it makes. Thanks!

second hand Mark V - worth giving to a tech for a 'service'

I don't know the age of my mark v or the state of the valves, caps etc. Is it worth giving it to an approved mesa tech for a once over? Are there any wear parts other than the valves that he could identify and replace? For all I know the valves could be four years old. I can't compare it to...

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

I read that a lot about the mesa v30s, I think its time I tried to get hold of one. The drama with trying them in the shop is that broken in v30s are (to my ears) substantially different to brand new ones. I've had 2 cabs with them in and they both warmed up considerably after some heavy use...

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

Thanks for the response. I find the bass gets flabby and mushy if I have it any higher than its current setting. I'll add more mids and see how it goes. 10 watts and variac is compressed and boxy at lower volumes through my cab. I've changed pups in my LP a few times (slash signature alnico pro...

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

You all made good points. I reverted back to the original tubes (I was using a mix of NOS, condition unknown), followed the set up guide, put it on 90 watts and importantly cranked it a bit. It sounded incredible. Sadly its just too loud for bedroom use. On 10 watts with both volumes low, it...

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

Thank you for all your input, I appreciate it. I jam with my mates but most of my playing is at loud bedroom volume. You all make good points, Mungo Zen (if that is your real name...) I'm going to try your method and see how it works.

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

Hey thank you. My volumes are both set slightly lower than yours, it starts to get loud pretty quickly. Cranking it helps, but I can't get near power amp distortion. Just too loud. I think low volume is part of the problem, but dropping the power to 10watts makes it a bit too compressed and...

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

Thanks for your replies. I rolled tubes to get where I am. I have a mix of NOS pre amp tubes including Mullards and a couple of others. They sound better than the mesa branded it came with, but I don't know how good those were or if I'm honest how good these are either. With no tube tester, all...

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

I'm trying to get channel 2 where I want it. I'm after an open, warm, moderately aggressive overdrive with good clarity. The nearest I've got is the settings below, using a Timmy to push the front end and a modified Ge-7 in the loop to add some low frequency punch and dial out a nasal upper mid...

Mesa tubes or others? Full re-tube, what to buy?

Hello all. I bought my mark v second hand. Some days I like it, others it really frustrates me. I dont know what state the tubes are in so I will replace them all. Do you guys recommend Mesa branded or something else? What should I buy? Any help appreciated.

no difference between clean and fat

Thanks for the replies. There was no difference at all when flicking the switch, the amp was faulty. I bought a replacement circuit board complete with switches from america and fitted it, amp now works fine. :)

no difference between clean and fat

It arrived through the post. Its second hand so I don't know if it has had the chassis out previously. All i have done is fit the output valves which were removed when it was posted. The seller seems reasonable, he suggested maybe something happened during transit. Not sure where to go from...

no difference between clean and fat

Thank you for your reply. I have it on 90w, pretty loud, bold switch on, I cannot hear a difference at all. There isn't a pop or anything either, to hint that something is changing. Les Paul standard with Doug Aldrich humbuckers. Crappy phone video, but surely there should be a noticeable...

no difference between clean and fat

Hello all, my name's Rick. Great forum, sorry my first post is a question. I just bought a second hand Mark v head, stock tubes, no mods. On channel 1 there is no audible difference when I switch between clean and fat mode. Tweed sounds different, but clean and fat are identical. Can anyone...
