I've never seen a sidewinder 8-string- do you have any pics? I want to build a 2x12 with celestion greenbacks, but I imagine a lot would depend on what type of sound you're wanting to get.

I haven't gotten a time factor yet- i have a eventide eclipse rack unit, and that's the coolest piece of gear i've ever had- so in the future i will definately get the time factor and mod factor pedals...

I think that eventide makes the best chorus sounds around- they have a new chorus/flange/phaser pedal that's called the modfactory. It looks very cool, and runs about $400 new- the really cool thing is that it can be updated with software updates in the future...

I've got two rack systems- a 2:100/ rectifier preamp setup, and a 50/50/studio preamp setup- with both, i didn't like the sound quality when i used the fx loops. I thought everything sounded better when i went from preamp to eventide to power amp..

If you're referring to a mesa 50/50 with the studio pre- then yes, they go great together. I've got that as my backup rack unit, and it sounds fantastic...

I'm a mesa junkie, so i'm probably not impartial enough.. but i love the clean sounds i get from my rectifier preamp/2:100 setup, as well as the cleans from my 50 cal+ combo- run those sounds through some sweet eventide chorus/delay and just pretend i'm in heaven..

I've had good results from using jj tubes- but agree with the others that tube tasting can be a fun thing. I just got a great buy on some ruby 6l6's, and i'm going to try them with my 50 cal+ combo- it's a relatively inexpensive way to experiment with tone options..

I have a .50+ combo as an extra rehearsal amp- i like it quite a bit. But i'm not sure about getting a nice crunchy sound at bedroom levels- i guess it depends on who's next to your bedroom... :) I think the clean channel on the .50+ is superb too..

When i acquire a new mesa unit, the first thing i do is replace the tubes- i want to make sure i'm diving in with everything dialed in for a good sound. If i buy a new guitar, i put on a fresh set of strings- so i have the same mindset with tubes..

I forgot reading that in the manual- but the modern mode is still not being engaged, and it's the gain knobs on the preamp that are acting as overall volume, and not the live output control on the preamp.

I can't really speak to what types of tubes might be good for metal tones- but i've liked using JJ tubes in my mesas, and mesa says that 6l6's are more reliable tubes than the el34s...

I've got a 50/50 paired with my studio preamp, and i love the combo- linked up with my eventide, and the sound is huge and very detailed. But i still think it's second fiddle to my 2:100/rectifier recording preamp setup... :D

I don't have any experience with the osp shock cases, but the standard osp case i bought was very nice for the money- better quality than the anvil case i have, and cheaper.
