A n00b and his quest for an amplifier

Tube amps are just loud, hands down. And if you're not playing them loud, you're not taking full advantage of them. Even 15 watt tube amps will rattle the windows. If you're still working on your playing skills then a modelling amp may indeed be the way to go- when I was learning I had a modeler...

    Roadster Brit setting

I'm falling more and more in love with my Roadster every time I play it. I had previously dismissed the brit setting, telling myself that I would wait to use it until I got some el-34s and could use it to its fullest potential. But today I turned the gain down to breakup level and wow! It sounds...

Roadster: Voodoo/FJA mod or new tubes

JW, what kind of duncans do you use?

    el-34s and rectifiers

When you say that cleans weren't as good, do you mean it was hard to get good, loud cleans? I like my to OD my clean channel and use the volume knob and soft picking to lower the distortion. Admins, this should be in the tubes forum, I'm sorry!

    el-34s and rectifiers

Okay, that makes me feel better :) I am definitely looking to add crunch and articulation to the growl. The tone I get on the Fat channel is glorious; what can I expect to lose/gain in this tone with the switch? More upper mids, tighter bass?

    el-34s and rectifiers

For those of you that have used el-34s in rectifiers, did it make the amp seem "brighter and thinner" as the Roadster manual says? I am thinking of trying some in my Roadster; I love the tone I'm getting with aps-2's in a strat on the Fat channel with max gain and I want to make sure that I...

    SD Pickup Booster

So is this the kind of pedal I would need for this application, adding more gain to the Fat channel on my Roadster?

    SD Pickup Booster

The reason I ask is because I have an opportunity to pick one up for relatively cheap. I would like to get some sort of boost to help add gain to the Fat channel on my Roadster. The resonance switch also intrigued me, but I'm looking mainly for just a pedal to help OD my Fat channel.

    SD Pickup Booster

Anyone have any experience with their Boogie and the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster pedal?

    50watt/100watt

Are there any tonal differences between 50 and 100 watts on a Roadster (or other Rectifiers?) besides the amount of volume required to get a good overdriven sound?

    hi fi strat metal tones

I did use a Hot Rails for a while, but swapped it for a Quarterpound. The HR had some nice crunch to it! It did have a staleness that I think the recto brought out. I've heard that the Invader is SORT OF like a full size Hot Rails...

    hi fi strat metal tones

Hmm, sounds like I'll be passing on the Tone Zone... especially w/ the roadster, the pup will have to balance with its natural harshness. Wow, it gave your strat the balls of an Explorer, that's a pretty good recommendation! How is the Breed for thrash type palm mutes? Thanks for the reply...

    Jared Leto's guitar

Jared Leto sings well live, he's a cool guy, he writes good songs... has anyone actually met him on real circumstances? I think A Beautiful Lie is a really good album, maybe people should listen to the band before passing judgment! How many rock bands these days have actual substance beyond...

    hi fi strat metal tones

I'm looking to seriously thicken up the bridge position of a strat (alder, rw board) for playing in a cover band. I'll be needing mainly metal type tones from the bridge, so a healthy amount of grunt and crunch. The SD QP I have in my other strat covers the strat-metal tones well enough for me...

    how to eq

does anyone ever try putting the output level pretty high to get power tube saturation, say around 3 or 4 oclock, and then adjusting the master level to taste? also, i was wondering if people had different eq/level-setting techniques for high output vs low output pickups... if certain settings...

    how to eq

great tips everyone, thanks alot! I'll be trying them after I get back from a music festival this weekend :) Also I was wondering about the relationship between the master and output levels... how high the master and output knobs need to be to overdrive the amp, the effects of overdriving one...

    how to eq

I am looking to get over the beginner learning curve with my Roadster, and I was wondering if there are any threads or online resources on "learning how to EQ a Mesa amp." I would like to learn quickly and effectively how to bring out upper mids, lower mids, etc. I have spent some time with the...

    bill lawrence question

The L500XL is a really big pickup. It is just about as tall as the bridge pickup cavity in my strat. Its cover also makes it about 2mm wider than the space in the pickguard. Has anyone else run into these issues? Should I even bother trying to make the pickup fit- since it will only be a few...

    bill lawrence question

For those of you that have used a Bill Lawrence XL500 (or the other output models) what kinds of guitars did you like it the best in? Strat style, LP style, or others? What amp did you use?
