What's the differences between gain and sustain??

Thanks Chris for the extensive explaination. That makes a lot more sense now. When adding a OD, I can clearly hear all the higher harmonics being added in. the mark IV has a lot more sustain compared to the DR. This is possibly b/c it has more compression. Also if I turn the gain up on the...

What's the differences between gain and sustain??

I heard people here say "yeah the amp has a lot of gain but not long enough sustain". Dont you have longer sustain when you have more gain? Comparing my recto to my mark IV with the same guitar and cab, my mark IV has a ton more sustain than the recto. But people here still say Recto has more...

Is the tight sound of a mark from the power amp section or?

I wondered if the mark series' tightness compared to the Rectos is b/c of the poweramp section or rather the gain structure in the preamp section. A mystery to me. I never tried plugging in my mark IV's pre out into the recto's power amp. It might sound very interesting. Anyone has done this before?

is your Boss SD-1 too noisy?

Hi, I'm using the Boss SD-1 on the front end of my DR and mark IV. It introduces a huge hum. The boss is running with a 9 v battery instead of the DC supply. It's just super noisy. The setting on the SD-1 is tone all the way down. Level, 12 o'clock. Drive 12 o'clock. The setting on my DR is...

Is it safe to run the dual rectifier without the 5u4?Help!!!

Thanks guys. I check the dual rectifier schematics. The biggest voltage difference is 350 volt between the 5u4's filament and plate. Sooo amazingly lucky that the El34's pins are arranged so that when it's in the 5u4's socket, the 350's not on the filament of the El34!!!! Otherwise the power...

Is it safe to run the dual rectifier without the 5u4?Help!!!

Hi, Got a 2 channel dual rectifier. But found out that the old owner puts 2 EL34 tubes in the rectifier sockets!!!! I have to pull these out and order some new 5u4's. Do you think it's still safe to run the amp without any 5u4 plugged in, using the solid state rectifier only? (Apparently the...

My mark IV + Gmajor tone

The end solo's just so creamy from the mark IV using the neck pickup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxp-UvVLeWY Amp is at very very low level ( you can actually hear the string attacks). THis just shows how saturated the Mark IV can be even at low level.

New Mark IV crackling . . . low volume. Power tube, right?

Sweet! Now you are have rig bigger and has more tone variety than Petrucci's! Just that is simply an achievement! My first mesa amp was a DC-3 which I ended up trading for a Dual rectifier b/c I can't get enough bass out of the EL84's and its smaller tranny. Then I traded my DR for a TR and...

New Mark IV crackling . . . low volume. Power tube, right?

LOL. Sorry about your recto. Glad you enjoyed your Mark IV. I didn't plug in the speaker cables for a few times and that's in fact really bad for the output transformer as I heard. I always check the speaker cables first before powering on the amps.

    Are vintage amps all tight?

I'm listening to Patera today and find their tone from a marshall is very focused like the mark's. I just wonder if all the vintage amps are all tight to begin with. Then there comes the Recto which started the loose tone.
