Preamp tubes only when there is a fault. Power tubes can last a very long time in Marks as they are not stressed into overdrive and are usually fan cooled. They really can go for years.

I have never found anything I like better than the EV in the combo (green stripe mk iii, hardwood, graphic, simulclass). I have ended up using mine with a Marshall 1912. A cheap option in the UK but it adds low end thump and is a good volume match for the EV. The 1912 on its own lacks bite...

My mark iii was the same until the volume pot was renovated. Spraying deoxit might help if your are lucky. I removed the whole pot: dissembled, cleaned and retensioned the wiper. A really awkward job to get the pot in/out. Depends how much it bothers you.

Does the ground switch on a Mark iii have any function in the UK where all our sockets are 240 volts and grounded. If so how should it be set? (BTW the amp does have a voltage selector)
