I didn't fall in love with the sounds either but as mentioned, Mesa put that mode in there to create more of a feel difference than anything. Then again, the Mark 5 has more sag than either the Mark 4 or 5 which then again creates quite a feel difference.

I've owned and played lots of this stuff. And here is the one and only reason I find the graphic Eq effective .....because the midrange control pot does almost nothing on the Mark amps. MArk 2 and 3 heads are midrangey and all I ever do with the graphic is cut a little mids on the 750hz slider...

The comment about the ground on the pots is a good one. It could easily be a tone pot or volume/ gain pot . Clean out all the pots thoroughly and test each one to see if it brings out more of the crackling problem.

My advice will depend on how you use your amps. If you're playing out or recording where the amp is turned up to where it is designed to be, I would stick with your Mark 3. If you play at home, the DC will sound fuller in the bass response and give you most of the Recto personality without...
