Whats with the 4 grooves on top of most of these old Mesa combo's?

I can understand if they were on top of a cab (so your head would kinda lodge into) but why on the combo? What would fit into those grooves, if anything?

that is the sus-4 (a SPECIAL suspended methog of) holding the chassis in the box with it hanging in rubber. It's a nice isolating method of hanging it in the wood...
