Last night it seemed as though my C+ was lacking gain, volume and there was some back round osculation going on. I assume I need to re-tube. Right now it has old STR-415's for the power and I believe old Mesa 12AX7's. The power tubes could be the originals but there were some extra pre-amp tubes in the bottom of the cab so I assume they were changed at some point.

What tubes do you guy's suggest or have had luck with for both power and pre-amp? I'm not looking for a death metal sound but hard rock.

Hey Rob. I run STR415s in the inner sockets and 6CA7s in the outer sockets of my Simul. I run vintage Amperex in V1 and V3, vintage Tung Sols in V2 and V4, and a Mullard 12AT7/CV4024 in the PI. Give me a call next time you're in Ithaca and I'll try to arrange a demo (if my GF isn't home!). Frank

Your STR-415's are probably still good. If you can test them, that's good, if not, just replace the preamp tubes first and see how it is. If you want to replace the output tubes, I'd look for another set of Mesa STR-415's first. If you do replace the STR 415's, hold on to them until you can test and verify they are spent

preamp tubes:

V1 RCA black plate, Tung Sol, Tungsram, Sylvania
V2 RFT, Tungsram, Tung Sol, Sylvania, GE
V3 RFT, Tungsram, Tung Sol
V4 Tung Sol, Sylvania, GE
V5 Tung Sol 5751, Sylvania 5751, GE 5751

I like NOS, but I won't pay much more than $15 for any tube. New stock, I have had good luck with Tung Sol Re-issues.
I'm sure you have but scour the tube section in the forum, there is lots there.
