I am now the proud owner of a DRG head that I just got today...My ears are still ringing, was too anxious to let her rip before I put ear plugs in-lol

This one here has the 105 PT and is loud as hell...Now, I knew exactly what I was getting into, I did have a 60/100 watt C+ with also with a 105 PT a year so ago...

I'm just trying to achieve a killer high gain 80's metal tone at lower levels. I'm able to get the tone I want at deafening stage like volumes, but that would mean my wife would also have to wear ear plugs up on the second floor while I'm jamming in the basement - lol

I know attenuators exist, but, the thought that I had was this...What would it take to build a room, or even a small enclosure that was sound proof that went around or over my cab that kept the sound in. I'd then mic the cab and record that sound and have it play thru another speaker where I could adjust the volume to taste. I'd have to listen to it record live while I play.

Forget about the work and cost versus buying an attenuator..I'm more concerned about the concept, would it work? If so how well?

I'm assuming the size of this encloser would affect the sound, is it next to impossible to figure out what the best dimension to built it by would be?

Please don't tear in to me if it's a dumb idea, jut looking to discuss the concept for those interested...

Thanks.

Vinyl Shed from Menards and some egg cartons from your local hatchery...

I have seen on ebay a 1x12 cabinet kind of "like" what you describe. It is enclosed and has a mic in it. THe brand ecapes me but it was a well known name. I know darn well someone will step up that knows of it and post in here. It's something for you to consider as well.

Me thinks you should really find a different way to satisfy your tone needs.... I get mine at lower SPL's!

This would be the most realistic example of what I'd do.

yep! there's one, but not the manufactured one I was thinking of.

I do have a Marshall SE100 rack mounted emulater/attenuator too, They are rare and very high priced. But the OP does not want to do this approach. I believe you are on a good track with that cab thing.

LOL, yeah I was thinkin the same, I'm gonna give it a go I think. I was thinkin of trying to build a cab a bit larger than my 4X12 and foam the inside, make it 5 sided (leaving out the bottom) then I can just put it over my 4X12. Not sure how that would sound, but it'd be really convenient to use when needed...

What do you think?

I'm more interested in the smaller version... I'm thinking of starting from scatch and just loading it with a 12". I'd only need this for recording, Live play I get to push my gear.

I've been gigging with the Mark II C+ lately with the vertical cab so I can crank it more. We generally have a pretty quiet backline compared to other bands. I'll put a SPL digital meter on it Saturday and post back. With the closed back cabs I get away with a lot more volume.

Are your intentions for practice at home volume control? I know you want the volume for power tube breakup right?

Try this for 'at home' metal volumes.

everything pulled

Vol 1: 9
Treble: 7
Bass: 2.5
Middle: 2
Master 1: 1.5
Lead Drive: 8
Lead Master: 2.5

Funny you mentioned this, I just found myself dialed in at about 99% to what you just mentioned above. It ain't half bad. I had my Mid at 4 and Bass at 2 otherwise the same what you had. Problem is, after 5 min or so I found myself slowly turning it up and up, now my ears are starting to ring lol

Good setting tho, thanks I'm gonna stick with em for now...still like this iso-cab idea for a little side project...

Yea the urge to turn up is too great with this amp

I have to say, with a little tweaking:

Vol 1: 9
Treble: 7
Bass: 2.5
Middle: 2
Master 1: 1.5
Lead Drive: 8
Lead Master: 2.5
Presence: 4.5

EQ:

60: Slightly above middle line
240: Slightly below middle line
750: Just above bottom line
2200: Slightly below middle line
6600: Slightly above middle line

Gibson SG (duncan distortions) --> Mark IIC+ playing thru a 1960B

NO FX's or other EQ's....

Sounds pretty damn good, nothing like the power and punch you get from cranking the two volumes in the 4-5 range but, I'm still very impressed. Gonna stick with these for quite practice like situations.

Thanks Platypus.

Gonna try that iso-cab as a project type thing sometime soon.

Sweet glad you dig it, that's pretty much exactly how I have mine set though I run my presence a bit higher. The EQ is pretty close too.

I also use EL34s in the outer sockets, not sure if that's how you run your DRG but it helps with the crunch a bit.

Yup got the EL34's going, definitely like em.

Yeah I'm gonna try the presence a little higher for the low volume thing, I do like the brightness/added gain it brings.

Question, my DRG has the bright reduction mod otherwise the rest is stock, do you have the bright reduction mod done on your C+, is it a DRG also?

I use my C+ exclusively for Metal and from my research it sounds like I may be better revearsing the mod in my case since I go for a metal tone...

My DRG had the mod but I had it removed and I like it much better.. I think if you just play metal you should look into having it removed. I use mine for everything but I still prefer it off.

Really, okay, I've only had this particular amp for two days but have been heavily pondering the idea, good to know thanks for your reply.
