Has anyone ever owned/tried the Randall V-Max hybrid amp? I'm interested in maybe picking one up for $650 locally but i'd like to get some feedback from any of you if possible (i've read most reviews on HC, MF, etc..).

I've owned several of the Randall solid state amps including a RG100HT (rack version of the RG100ES), Century 170, Warhead, & most recently the RM100 modular tube head. The Warhead produced the best distortion but that was only after pushing it with a Furman PQ4 in the loop and an MXR Kerry King up front. Without the EQ's it sucked even though it had it's own graphic EQ. Since I bought my Tremoverb I have not looked back and it blows them all away. I think Randall is an OK amp if you are on a budget but you already have a way better amp with your Boogie. Now keep in mind that I have not actually played the V Max but I went through alot of Randall heads and was never totally happy until I bought the Mesa. Plus the newer Randalls have alot of quality control issues and are known for having problems. The pre-buyout amps are pretty much bullet proof.

Thanks a lot for the info... but I was actually planning on getting it for my friend (no way can i get rid of my trem yet!) but I think we've decided on a Sovtek Mig-50H instead.. I hear those are pretty sweet considering the prices that they go for

Oh, cool man......thought you might be wanting to try one out for yourself.

Haha no no, i was going to buy the Vmax... and read lots of good reveiws, but then I saw a Sovtek, and you know, obviously their much cheaper..

The Sovtek is no slouch. It is a bit of a Marshall knockoff but then again who didn't copy Marshalls over the years? For that matter, Marshall took a Fender design like Mesa did too. I have played Sovtek and would play one in a pinch (provided all my amps failed).

The Vmax looks interesting if you are into that kind of thing though. They have some artists endorsing them now. I know that the endorsements are only a sales thing and most will still use whatever they really like behind the curtain offstage and line up their endorsed product on display onstage. So, the endorsements may or may not be valid. If you like it though, you should not let anything get in the way of you buying one. Everyone has to go through those stages at some point.
