I've been running my Mark IV shortie thru a Peavey 5150 cab, which has Sheffields in it....

apparently, this cab is rated 16 ohms. The IV only has an 8 ohm and two 4 ohm outs.

I've been running on 8, retardedly assuming that the cab was rated 8.

Is this the correct thing to do? Will I damage my cab or more importantly, my Mark IV?

Or should I stop running it and get a new cab or new speakers?

and I think the times I did run the 5150 head into that cab, I ran it at 8 ohms when it has 4, 8, and 16 outputs. I should have run it 16, correct?

You can use the 8ohm tap of the amp to run a 16ohm cab with no problem - that's the connection Mesa recommends. So, relax, you did nothing wrong...

I think the general rule is that as long as the ohm number is lower on the amp and higher on the cab you're fine.
Correct, though mesa advice you to rewire a 16ohm cab to 4 ohms in their manuals.
