the Mark V emulates the TriAxis just in head form instead of rack form.

Well said, sir.

80's technology... the tube circuits these gems are based on are more like 50's technology (Fender...). If it ain't broke don't fix it.

No offense, but I think that the answers to the initial post are a bit pat. The Triaxis does not have every amp sound that a person could want. Even limiting oneself to the just the world of Boogie amps, the Triaxis doesn't have everything.

Sure, the triaxis is a highly flexible piece of equipment and it has a lot of different voices that one can use. But, the Mark V (or Mark IV or Mark III or whatever) also have a lot of different voices. Not all of these voices are available in the Triaxis. The circuitry just isn't there to do some of the voices.

For example, none of the Mark III or Mark IV rhythm 2 channel topologies are in the Triaxis. Similarly, the "Edge" and "Crunch" channel 2 topologies from the Mark V are probably not in the Triaxis either. If you like the sound of any of those channels, you're not going to find those circuits in the Triaxis. Maybe you can tweak the Triaxis settings to sound kinda close (maybe), but the circuit topology is totally wrong.

If you're talking pure circuit topology, what the Triaxis does have are circuits that are close approximations to:

* Blackface Fender preamp circuit: Rh 1 Green
* Mark IV clean preamp circuit: Rh 2 Green
* Mark 1 lead preamp circuit: L1 Green
* Mark IIC / Mark IV lead circuit: L2 Yellow

The circuitry for the other channels are simply variations on these four topologies (I'm not going to talk about the L1 Red...it's too controversial). If you want some other circuit topology, you're out of luck. There's no software upgrade that can be downloaded into the Triaxis to give you a different type of preamp circuit. Want a Marshall preamp? To bad. Want a Soldano SLO100 preamp? Nope. Want a Boogie Mark IIB lead? Can't even do that.

All of this is in comparison to a "modern" modeling pre-amp (think Line6). In a modeling amp, everything is simulated in software. So, if the manufacturer wants to upgrade their product, they could write some new software and offer it on the internet as a patch. You could download the patch and, Bingo, you've got an approximation of a Bogner XTC. Of course, I'm not impressed with the sound of most modeling amps...but that's another issue.

So, yes, the Triaxis does have some limitations. But every piece of gear has limitations. The Triaxis may be very flexible, but it cannot be tweaked to get ANY sound. If you like the Boogie Mark sound (not Recto), the Triaxis is the bomb. But, if you'd like to have Marshall sounds too, you're going to need a different piece of gear. The Triaxis can't be "upgraded" to give that sound. The circuits just aren't in there.

Good luck!
