Is it safe to run the Mark V with only two power tubes (El34) (middle two or outside two) if I am only using 45 Watts?

Really? No one has an opinion on this? or has even thought about trying it??

Why would you want to do this when the amp has a 45-watt switch that shuts off two of the tubes anyways? Unless I'm not understanding your question...

I should have included a little background but I was at work when I thought of this today.

Here's the deal: I have been really curious about how EL3b's would sound in the Mark V but I only have two at the moment. So instaed of throwing down $60 to $70 dollars I was thinking about taking out all the 6L6's and putting the two EL34B's in the inner two sockets. But before I tried it I wanted to check with you guys and see if you thought it would be safe to do this while keeping the amp in 45Watts only.

The MKV is a 4 tube amp...would you take 1/2 of your plug wires off your car to see how slow it goes??? To be on the safe side...I wouln't risk a 2400 amp to save 80 bucks...

True. I probably will just end up ordering the other two tubes. Although I can't help but think that it shouldn't damage the amp in any way if when you run the amp in 45 Watts, it turns off the outter two tubes anyways.

won't hurt it, but you have change your ohms selector to 1/2 the value you usually use (if you run an 8 ohm cab, set the amp to the 4 ohm setting).

i did what you are saying. you can also put the two tubes in the positions nearest to the rectifier tube and run the amp in 10w mode. i have a pair of rca 6V6s that i do this with from time to time.

i dont worry about changing the output load, since you are normally running a mismatch somewhere in the amp if you are using different wattage settings. but if you plan to use only 45 or only 10 then you can plug an 8 ohm load into your 4 ohm output.
