Have you ever wondered what it must be like seeing everyone and their mother trying to achieve your tone? Having hoardes and masses of people playing your songs very poorly?

I was just thinking about how Petrucci must feel to have so many trying to get his tone and play his licks. I have also thought about how it must be for the guys in say Metallica or Lamb of God. I know that it must be in some way flattering but at the same time imagine what they must think when they read the posts of endless banter about achieving their tone.

Put yourself in their shoes momentarily and read some of these posts on any of the boards objectively. It can be quite interesting. Depending upon the reader and the mood he is in, some of this stuff could get old or plain irritating. I know that if it were me that people were trying to emulate, I would just assume let people know what it is that is being played and there would be no mystery involved. As far as people trying to play my music goes, I am unsure how I would take that. I mean it is one thing to want to be like your hero but another all together to try on the suit and attempt to save the world. I guess the long of the short is that I feel that as nice as it is to be able to get a tone or nail a lick, I feel that we should all be playing our own tunes in our own way. Though music is a common language it is also an individual thing. There cannot be enough said about one's own creativity. Without it there would not be the greats that everyone almost obligatorily immediately tries to emulate upon first learing to play their guitar. I must admit that though I do enjoy playing someone else's tune once in a while, I am much more rewarded when I get done laying down a new track or bringing ideas of my own together to make music.

Please forgive any remarks that any of you may take offense to. I am just in a pensive mood right now. I am not trying to offend anyone or discredit anything. I guess that I am just thinking outside the box a little.

Russ, the one thing I took pride in when I was gigging up in the NYC area was that no-one would come up to me and say..."hey, you sound just like...." filling in the blank with every major player of the time. Vito Bratta of White Lion fame ( an excellent player BTW) played in cover/original bands during my days and the one thing that would stick in your mind is even while playing originals, he sounded just like Van Halen, same was true of Randy Jackson of Zebra who WAS the consummate Led Zep clone.(no not American Idol  ). On the other hand Mark Hitt of Rat Eace Choir and George Cintron of Cintron where phenomenal players that made any song they played sound like a great original. Cintron could play most of Van Halen's licks piano style (above the fretboard) and is still one of the greatest unknown American guitarists.

I don't think you've said anything out of line. But I don't think Petrucci (or any other well-known player) gives it a second thought.

In my opinion, trying to emulate the style and sound of your heroes is just one more step towards developing your own. "Trying" being the key word there because try as we might, we will never sound exactly like anyone but ourselves.

Honestly, I don't think it matters what gear you play. If you have your own style, it'll shine through. If you're style is pretty similar to another players, I think it'll also shine through.

Having said this, I now realize that both my guitars are signature models.
