I recently grabbed a Tremoverb head. As I understood, it's supposed to have the dual rec modern gain channel. I also have a Studio Preamp, and had borrowed a buddy's single rec solo head for a while, and, in comparison, my modern red channel gain seems awfully fuzzy and lacking sustain. The bass response is very loose in both the bold and spongy settings. I've had all of the tubes tested and I've switched between el34's and 6l6's. I don't know if I'm just failing to eq or what. I bought this amp thinking I was getting a total package of my clean, fusion, and metal tones with the awesome bonus of an assignable and footswitchable loop. If anyone has some experience with playing metal on a tremoverb, I'd love to here your recommended settings.

How old are the power and preamp tubes you are using? Are you using the tube or diode rectification? Spongy is probably not the setting for your needs...and what are your gain/eq/master settings? Finally, what speaker cabinet are you running? These are all variables in getting the amp to perform correctly and have the signature recto sound. (How did you have the tubes "tested"?) Thanks!

My guitar tech tested the tubes in his shop with both of his state-of-the-art testers. The EL34's in it tested good but far from new, so I put in a set of mesa 6L6's I have that test better than the brand new JJ's he had in his shop. Still didn't change. I've tried both bold and spongy settings. I've tried both the tube and solid state rectifiers. Compared to my single rectifier through the same 1X12 Avatar with Eminence Swamp Thang it had about half of the gain. I've tried running a cable in the loop so I could turn up the master a little more and dial it back with the loop volume but it didn't help. There is actually a volume drop when I switch the red channel from "blues" to "modern" which just according to the manual shouldn't be the case. Another thing I notice is a serious lack of bass in the clean settings. I had the bass knob dimed. I've never needed to, much less been able to do that with a mesa to get a decent bottom end. I'm starting to think someone tried to mod it and failed. If I don't hear back from mesa, I'll be returning the amp. It's the second Tremoverb I've purchased. The first was online from Guitar Center and they emailed me the next day to say it had already sold. I guess I'm not meant to own one of these.

These amp are known for having ldr issues. This could be causing your issue.
Edit:My red channel modern has a noticeable volume drop when switched from blues to modern. The manual says there should be a volume difference butting doesn't mention which mode is louder. Both modes on my two channels get quieter when switched to high gain
