i have the opportunity to buy a tremoverb,
Ive always wanted one since they came out, theres one for sale about an hours drive away, i so want it,
i know its impractical for me becuase i'm not in a band, and no plans to get back into live playing.
At the moment i have a maverick and a blue angel. if i pull 2 power tubes on the tremoverb (which i think is ok to do??) would it make it any more usable for home playing/recording.
my maverick is fine, i play it at home with the volume about 9 oclock. thats still pretty loud.
is the tremo with 2 tubes pulled still going to be insanely loud or would it be usable.
I know its not ideally suited to home use, its just i've always wanted one.
(i know really i'll have to try it out but i thought i'd gather a few opinions before i go to the shop)
any comments welcome.
thanks guys

I don't find mine impractical for playing at home and I'm not currently in a band. I do use an attenuator, but it isn't strictly necessary. I also prefer it with four power tubes than with two, it just sounds better and the volume difference is minimal.

It's actually much more useful for low-volume playing than the Blue Angel, for anything other than a strictly clean tone. I've owned all three of these amps (1x12" Mav and BA, 2x12" Tremoverb), and the Tremoverb will very nearly cover as much ground as the other two. The clean tone is not as good as the BA (which IMO has the best clean tone of *any* amp), but it's as good or even better than the Maverick. It doesn't do the pushed-power-tube thing as well the BA does, but you need to be loud for that anyway. Everything else it does better than either of them, and it's not as fussy to dial in as the Mav's dirty sound. I do sometimes miss the others, but to be honest not enough to buy another one of either really.

I should mention that I changed the tubes in all of these for NOS, with 12AT7s in the phase inverters and reverb positions, and 12AY7s in V2 of both the Mav and BA.

The funny thing is that when I lived in an apartment I found it was much easier to get a good tone at *really* low volume with a big tube amp set clean, and an external preamp. The only time I got a complaint about volume was when I was using a 5W amp, even though it wasn't cranked. You just get a much fuller tone at whisper volume with a huge amp than a tiny one, so you can play even quieter. Sounds backwards I know, but it isn't.

Yes. In addition to attenuators, I have been looking into this option as well. I was thinking about running my Electra Dyne clean with a boutique crunch pedal.

thanks for the responses guys, I'm definately going to check it out and have a go in person, see if its suitable for me. i got high hopes for it now.

it was sold by the time i finished work.
should have taken a sickie.

but at least i still have the Blue angel which is the best amp i've ever played.
so i have fun times too.
plus if i had got the tremoverb i'd be GASsing for something else already ;)

just bought a tremoverb, oh i am soooooo excited.
its a 2x12 combo.
its in great condition.
should get it by the weekend hopefully.
oh yeaaaahhhhh
oh and i got a A-B box so its gonna be blue angel cleans and tremo distortion.

I got it :)
its great, i got a couple of issues in that the treble and reverb on the red channel cut out but i'm pretty sure this just needs a new pot. if i just move the pot a fraction it comes back on.

I have a question on the channel cloning, when i clone either channel i dont notice much of a difference between blues and clean, is this normal?
the blues is maybe a little bit fatter but i'm not sure.
to be honest i dont hear much of a difference when they are not cloned, the blues can be pretty clean and the clean can be dirty with the gain up a bit.
the difference between modern and vintage high gain is obvious so i'm sure the channels are begin cloned fine.

been investigating further and the orange channel does change, if i have it set to clean and then clone it to red then it does change voicing.
The blues on the red channel doesnt change however, so i think its stuck in one voicing.
maybe an LDR issue??
(the modern on red will clone to vintage though.)

any ideas?
