transformer rust

my friend got a used dual recto, and the transformers have a light rust all over, is there something that 1; can remove it and 2; prevent it from returning.

1. steel wool and denatured alcohol

2. shellac

any special shellac? obviosly a brush on type, but anything i should be looking for?

i just got home depot stuff.

Don't clean the laminations too aggressively. I understand that you can damage and short-circuit the laminations to eddy current. Better to leave a little rust on than trash the transformer.

make sure you duct tape every single opening or else the steel wool shaving will stick to your circuit board!
