I have a second hand Single Recto. It works fine and sounds great but the power transformer makes a slight hum when on. Is this normal?

is it an audible hum or more of a vibration that can be heard? My amp's PT vibrates a little which is annoying.

Sometimes power transformers will vibrate, even new ones. It's annoying but it's not the end of the world. Depends on the reason, sometimes you can tighten them down and it will stop it.

If it's buzzing like humming than i would have it replaced or at least looked at by a tech. I think vibrating can be a sign of a week spot in the windings or it can be magnetic fields not getting along. Buzzing means a really week or bad spot in the winding.

You can touch the transformer after your amps been on for 1/2 hr or longer and if it's to hot to hold on to than something is wrong for sure. It's okay if they get a little warm to the touch but not hot. I don't think my transformer even gets warm.

you should probably do that when its unplugged, and not powered on....for the infinitely stupid :)

Lulz ^

Tell Megatron to stop humming

okay for reals....is this an audible hum ? vibration hum coming from the transformer? or by hum do mean a 60cylce/ground loop hum?

A humming transformer can be a sign of dirty power. A place I have played has ugly power (very distorted sine wave on a scope), and my amp's PT will hum and vibrate. Every other place I have used the amp, the transformer is dead silent. Oddly, the amp has always sounded really, really good at that place.

Something to check, anyway.
