Simple problem...I have a RK and want to tighten up the low end a lot! I'd like to get it closer to Mark territory, short of having to buy a Mark (unless of course someone wants to trade a Mark V for my RK? LOL!)

Any tricks or tips to achieve this?

Tanks dudez

If you want a mark, buy a mark.

Otherwise, look into el-34 tubes, overdrive pedals, (Tube Screamer, Maxon OD808, etc) or maybe look into a different cab. A lot of guys have been talking about how Mills Cabs are much tighter.

Try an OD like an OD808 or a tubescreaner variant. They are notorious lowend killers but when used right can be the perfect tool for tightening the tone of an amp. The rectos sound awesome with an OD808.

Or do an MXR 10 band EQ. Cut 250 and 500, boost 125, boost some of the higher mids/treble. Super cut and punch.

I just put my boss ge7 in the loop, frontloaded with a zw-44 od pedal, very very close to my mark. Im new to the road king, but Im willing to bet with a couple more hours tweaking and experimenting I will be overall happier with the rk than the mark IV. Not to take anything away from my IV I still love that thing to death.

I've tried a few things that work. One is to run an OD pedal up front, although you might not like the compression it gives. Also, try an EQ in the loop. Another method is to replace the preamp valve in V1 with a Mesa SPAX7 preamp. Also, poweramp valves with more headroom (not necessarily different types of valves) helps a little too...

Even so, I'm pretty sure it won't get as tight as a Mark V. Horses for courses I say...

Yknow .... Roadking, sometimes it makes my world rock and sometimes it makes me want to start typing eBay sell!

The problem with the roadking is that there are so many features in the path of creating tone that you start worrying more about how the sound and tone is rather than getthings done with your playing time.

I have put some serious repairs into my roadking one ... I have spent alot of money on tubes and jack repair... I'm getting a little bitter about the RK... I'm using my Randall RM100
more and more....

The rk1 is a great amp but I don't wanna worry about slappin' my JJ's powertubes in and then have to pay some dood $$ to bias em

You're getting ripped off paying someone to bias tubes for your RK imo. You just order tubes from a supplier and state that you need them to work in the fixed bias range of a RK.

Well I have not paid anyone to bias the amp in fact I ordered JJ's and told them my orders were for a road king....

I never opened an amp in my life!! But I would be willing to check it out

If you have told them that you need poweramps for use in Mesas, they will get them with bias ratings that suit Mesas. So all you have to do is plug them in, and you are set...

Replace original Mesa tubes with JJ high gain tube set ,or something even better if you can find , that's it ,that's all .
This is all about tubes ,not about amp , RK is the King ,by the way :D
I did it last year .
Now I am enjoying to tweak my RK II , I can have almost any tone I want ....
Tight but smooth , rude but sensitive , responsible and dynamic , with brutal power on the way that only Mesa can be ....
No more amps for me , this is the last one .

BB Preamp AND Stiletto cab. You can go the tube route, but in the end it will still sound like a Recto with different tubes.

I like the RM100's more than the RK too.
