How about: "Desperately trying to sell off impulsively bought and never-used gear so my wife doesn't kill me (or so I can get my truck fixed)" ?
Or even better: "Desperately trying to sell off impulsively bought and never-used gear so I can buy even more impulsively bought and never-used gear."
YMMV
Yeah but, this is a direct description exactly what we're trying to do.giantstepjoe said:MrMarkIII said:"Thinning the herd"...

... but in this day of age we use similes, metaphors, and euphemisms.
e.g. when we do Spring cleaning and have a lot of garabage, we have to go to the public dump but we rather say "We're going to the landfill."
e.g. Your favorite uncle is in prison and you want to visit him. So instead of telling your girlfriend you can't spend time with her on Sunday because you have to visit your uncle in prison you say "Honey I'm going to visit my uncle at the Correctional Institution."
e.g. you want to purchase a car but can't afford a brand new one so you purchase a used one but you tell your friends "I bought a 'pre-owned car."
get it?
... [silent] ... uh ...why are you tying to say? [note to self: I think I have been brain washed by the Gov't]MrMarkIII said:RR said:... but in this day of age we use similes, metaphors, and euphemisms.

Not to sound like a crazed conspiracy theory militia-head  , but ain't terms like "landfill" and "correctional institution" euphemisms invented by our beloved government overlords?
Orwell called it "doublespeak" in his "1984".
Of course, "pre-owned" is advertising, you expect doublespeak from advertising. The gov'mint must be hiring dudes from Madison Ave.
God help us all
