Hogle zoo, and the Ghost of the Bayou

my 1st trip to the zoo here in salt lake.....

this is "Antoine".

This alligator isn’t albino; he’s leucistic, and purely white in color with dazzling blue eyes (well, dazzling might be a bit over the top!)
he was born in 1987.
he's about 9 feet long... a regular american alligator, except for the 'white' part.
weighs about 100kg.
he'll get sunburned if he stays out in the light for too long.

leucism--
it's a genetic condition, he has no pigment cells in his skin at all, but the eyes do have pigment.
there were 18 white baby alligators in all, with 7 other normal ones. they went to the auubon zoo in new orleans, and this one goes on tour.
all the white ones were male.
very rare.

Great photo's!
I wonder what combination of environmental factors resulted in THAT color scheme .

Wow, that almost looks fake to me being white. Cool read, never even new it was possible! Good photo's by the way.

they have 2 albino gators at Alligator Adventure in Myrtle Beach, SC. except they don't have the blue eyes. they have red eyes, which makes them look evil as all hell. awesome photos man!
