so im wondering how to do this safely. I dont need to do this live but i would like to be able to do this without having it turn off the amp, connect the new speakers, turn it on, wait, flip on standby and then compare the new sound to something I hardy remember.

can i get away with a simple AB switch as long as Im not playing while switching?

Switching speakers in standby is completely safe. Don't use an A/B box because it may leave the unused amp with an open output depending on how the box is wired. Some Mesa amps are unstable with no load even with no signal input.

If the cabs you're comparing can be plugged into two different jacks on the amp, you don't even have to do that - put one plug fully in and leave the other out halfway. When you want to switch cabs, push the halfway one fully in and pull the other half out - do it that way round so the amp is not left with an open output. When both are connected the amp will technically be running into a low impedance load, so it's probably better to not play anything, but Mesas are not very sensitive to that anyway and it really doesn't matter.

As long as you are using one head, and switching between two cabs and the amp always sees a load, it should be completely fine. I've done the same thing. I don't know if cheaper A/B switches wouldn't be able to handle much power (?) but mine seems to work fine, and Road Rage Pro Gear (loopers and switches manufacture) told me it's safe.
