A while ago I picked up a Studio Pre, and now I want to use it with my Roadster and have it be as simple as possible... minimal toe tapping.
I have an A/B footswitcher at my disposal: Radial Tonebone JX2 (highly suggest it). One side is plugged into the input of the Roadster, and the other the Studio Pre. I have a cable running from the "Main Out" of the Studio Pre into the "FX Return" of the Roadster. I turned off the "FX In" on all the Roadster channels so I could switch in the Studio Preamp via the Roadster footswitch.
It seems that the best way to treat the Studio Pre as a footswitch is to have the Radial select both amps and run them at the same time. Turning on the Roadster FX footswitch uses the Studio Pre, and off uses the Roadster. It yields an amazing variety of tones, but it poses three problems:
1. I am not using the Studio Pre for it's cleans... Therefore, the distortion/OD is always on, and if the Radial runs both amps at the same time, there will be a sound/tone bleed. For example, if I switch to the Roadster (Studio Pre is still running in distortion but is not selected), and switch to channel 1 for cleans, you can hear the Studio Pre bleed through, though very softly... enough to be annoying and sound like a badly shielded cable picking up radio frequencies.
2. Having the Studio Pre always on and controlled through the Roadster's FX loop footswitch limits effects usage. I assume the only solution is to purchase a multi-loop rackmount machine. But that further complicates things and requires an additional controller.
3. Using the Studio Pre on each one of the Roadster's channels allows for multiple tones. However, there is major sound level disparities even if the Roadster's channel volumes are balanced (only happens when Studio Pre is switched in). Does one of the EQ knobs on each channel also act as a FX volume?
The sound is great, but is there a better way to do it?
