Studio Pre: Which tubes slots are what?

I'm sure it's been asked, although I've had trouble looking for this answer.

Which slots do what? (e.g. clean, gain, reverb, etc)

V1, V2, V3, V4 etc..

What are the recommended (best sounding brand) tubes to use in each slot?

I'm into very high gain, crystal clear shimmering cleans aka John Petrucci tone. NOS might be a choice and i'm open to suggestions.

What do you guys think about Allegro Sound tubes?
