I'd say get a surge protector and always make sure to warm up the tubes before use. Sometimes you just get a faulty tube though.
 
In the past 25 years of playing tube amps, I have come to one conclusion when it comes to tube maintenance... BUY LOTS OF SPARE TUBES.. you'll like the voicing of some, and others won't be as stellar, but good for backup tubes.
