Hey folks looking for some suggestions. I don't seem too pleased with the V30s in my Roadster combo. They sound a little muddy, dark and lack some definition. Anybody here with a Roadster combo swap speakers? I'm looking for a speaker with warm cleans but can still keep tight low end for the high gain stuff. I have a Jensen C12N in my Hot Rod Deluxe and love the punchy sounds but I know they wont handle the lows.

Ive tried roadster with a laney 320w cabinet (dont know what they have). It sounded awesome to me but not better than 30V celestion speakers.
It also sounds a little bit muddy when you play in small rooms. It sounds better in larger places. It gains more reverb.
Also try more and more pedal. I love my MXR wylde overdrive pedal.

An ext. cab will help take the load off. That cured the mud on my LSC with C-90's. I put some webers in an ext. cab. If your thinking new speakers for the combo, I don't think anything will do it. Those v-30's are pretty efficent. If there is a speaker that will, it will cost $200-300 ie: EV Black label etc. Also try a different speaker jack. Like the 4 ohm jack. And lastly you could consider a retube and or experiment with the tube rectifier option switch in 50w tube rectifer. I even had some improvement with a BBE stomp. I did all of the above, but the most significant change was the ext. cab. I can certainly say that I don't regret any of these upgrades even though it cost me hundreds, Cause my sound is much better. I also tried those webers in my combo and they didn't sound as good as the C-90's did, and I fried one of C-90's apparently during the unsoldering process. That cost me $100 bucks to replace. Fortunately they have em in stock in hollywood. Moral to the story...Mesa probably put in the right speaker in for that amp.

Thanks guys. I was wondering about the EVMs. I might give those a shot if I decide to keep the Roadster. I had an early 90s DR and I know I got a lot tighter sound out of it than the new DR stuff.

I have been planning to build an extension cab for my LSC for quite a while and I am finally getting around to it. I originally wanted to use Tone Tubby's after hearing Bob Weir live and really digging the sound of the TT's, but they are really pricey. I'm not settled yet but leaning towards Emminence Cannabis Rex 12's. They rated for 50W but I don't play my LSC at 100W anyway. I just hate to give up the option if I ever wanted to.

Did you consider hemp cones for your upgrade and have you ever heard these speakers in person?

2 fifty watter's can handle 100 watts. Unlees your ext cab is just 1 speaker. I haven't tried the hemp but, Eminence has the characterists of all their speakers on thier website. I recall hearing a demo of all their speakers with the same guitar and amp and a switching system. I think it was on You Tube, at some show. It wasn't easy to discern all the different nuances though.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find that YouTube vid when I get home.

The cab I'm planning on will be an open back 2x12 with about the same dimensions as the LSC combo. I'll post some pics and a sound review after I get the cab built. I was not aware that I could use two 50 Watters and pump 100W at them. I always thought the individual speakers had to be pretty close to the max power of the amp regardless of how many speakers are used. Thanks for straightening that out.
