I was looking at my spare tubes (power tubes and preamp tubes) and realized that i don't have a spare rectifier tube!!!! nothing wrong with the one in my amp but has you know "need to have spare tubes"

has anyone tried any 5U4G or 5U4GB from different manufacturers? and what would be the tonal differences from different brands?

thanks in advance

I got an Electroharmonix 5U4gb for a spare for my Ace and it works just fine (just like stock). Unlike output tubes, no worries about biasing.....just plug and play. 8)

Note that the 5U4 allows just about the most sag of any Rec tube currently available. If you want to experiment, a GZ34 (aka 5AR4) will allow a higher plate voltage (less sag) and a different "feel". Somewhere between Solid State rec. setting and 5U4.
I plan to try this myself as soon as I catch up on the holiday bills!

Good luck! :)

I guess I should carry a spare rectifier tube, but if it came down to it at a gig, I would just run all 3 channels in the 90 Watt mode to get me through the evening and get a new rectifier tube at my next convenient opportunity.
