im pretty sure it died. i was playing some audio and it was all crackly and staticy. i thought it might just be the audio file, but i went to play something else, i heard a light pop noise from my speakers and then i get no audio at all. i'm using external jbl speakers, but i know it's not them that are the problem because my ipod plays through them just fine. anyone that could help, much appreciated.

yeah, I have the same problem, but i mainly use cds on my stereo so i ignore it... my soundcard is crap

what brand computer is it? is it desktop or laptop? best thing to do is find a diagnostic you can boot the computer into and test the output there, even better if you have multiple speakers to test with. this way you know it isnt anything that can be software related(which it most likely isnt, but i've seen stranger things happen).

most likely i'd say the soundcards preamp is now toast. i'd personally just get a new sound card or if the computer is under warranty just call the manufacturer for a motherboard replacement.

it's a dell inspiron 5150 laptop, and i've had it for a few years now. it's weird because when i boot it up it makes a little pop noise as if it's trying to play that "welcome" chime, but that's the most i'll get out of it. any idea what could've caused this, or is it just that dell uses crap soundcards or something? either way i think i'll just buy a new soundcard.

that model had a known overheating issue, mainly with the vents getting clogged in the rear left. dell has a policy where if something becomes a safety hazard it must be captured and replaced with a like or better model. if your soundcard no longer works then it is a problem with the motherboard, a likely cause for a motherboard failure would be heat, which of course could be a safety hazard. take that information for what it is, i do not advocate trying to rip off the company, but if by chance your computer was too hot to touch then this could be a way to get the problem rectified.
