A good friend of mine has offered me an older two-channel Dual Rec at a great price. It's condition is near mint, but I have not yet had the chance to "test drive" the amp. A mutual friend of ours once owned this amp and I have seen it before, so I know it's in great shape.

How do the two-channel Dual Recs compare to the newer three-channel versions? What kind of tones should I expect from the two-channel? I'm basically looking for great rock/metal tones ala Dream Theater, King's X, etc. but also would like to play some classic rock with it.

two channel, 3 channel, it doesnt really matter its still a dual Rec... it is not a noticable difference unless you sit in your basement 24hours a day, have lilly white skin and do nothing but compare the two

generaly the two channel is thought of as being slightly warmer and a little more "focused" sounding where the 3 channels seem to have a hair more grind to their sound.

but kylek is right... its still a dual rec and you'd barly notice if any difference. but the 3 channels do seem to have a slightly improved clean. with the vintage setting and enough tweekin im sure you can dial in some killer classic rock sounds. and of course modern mode is always fun

a couple of topics there...generally people say the 2ch has more clarity whereas the 3ch is a bit granier...it all depends on what you listen for, the guitar, settings.....i've settled on the idea that mesa voiced the 3ch to suit the current musical genres whereas back then they were made to suit the other genres...
