I have a really noisy tube, it's a high pitched squealing and a loud hum when I am not touching my pickups. It seems to happen in my high gain channels, but not in channel 1.
Things I notice are
1) Rectifier tubes do not seem to be lit at all, even if the channel I am using is set to recto tracking
2) Noise isn't noticeable on channel one at all
3) The problem is intermittent
4) Volume drops out, almost like a serious compression
The power tubes are new. They have not been jostled around at all. None are glowing really bright, but all of them have differing intensities.
None of the preamp tubes appear to be blown.
So, the plan is to replace v1 with a new tube first. Then move on to the other tube positions. I plan on replacing v1 with a chinese 12ax7 (mesa branded) and then if I still experience it, move down the line.
Which position is v1?? Facing the back of the amp, is it on the left (closest to the rectifier tubes) or the right?
What is the purpose of the tube covers?
