Recently I noticed that I had dialed in my tone at lower volumes and what sounded great to me when practicing sounded a little thin and fizzy at gig volumes. I should also note that I have been using a 31 band eq in the loop to bump 100 and cut 200 to tighten the amp. I decided to back to the drawing board on channels 3 and 4 and for a baseline started with Petrucci's Road King settings that are posted in the rigs and tones section of this forum. The main differences I noticed were presence, treble and rectifier settings.
My previous setup for channel three was Bold, Vintage, Diode, presence 11:00, bass 12:00, mids 10:30, Treble 2:00, Gain, 3:00. For Petrucci's settings Bold, Vintage, Tube Rectifier, presence 8:30, bass 12:00, mids 10:30, treble 11:00, gain 3:00. After dialing it in this way I disengaged the eq. These settings sounds a little dark and loose at a low volume but nice and liquidy. As the amp gets turned up the highs seem to start to come out and sound smooth and fat while the bottom tightens up a bit. When I engage the eq now it sounds a little weak and if I continue using these settings or a variation of them I think I may stop using the eq altogether. I had basically the same experience with Channel 4 modern mode as well. I wonder how many others have had a similar experience and are now running their presence and treble lower now.

Fletcher/Munson curve. Human hearing is disproportionately less sensitive to highs and lows at lesser volumes. As the volume increases, our hearing spectrum starts to flatten out and we hear highs and lows more evenly. So you have to tweak sounds at the volume you will use them.
