I just found this forum gotta say i am glad i did ,very cool place with great info.Anyways i saw alot of you roadster owners are having trouble with your tone on ch 3 and 4 being unfocused loose and so forth.Let me tell you i had the EXACT same problem when i first bought it i found there wasnt enough gain unless i dimed it and so on.

Try this and let me know what you think ,right now and the way it will stay is i have my masters on ch3 and 4 dimed all the way ,and i use the output volume as my main volume ,my gain is just past noon and trust me its tight as hell and tons of gain on tap now .Believe me i thought i made a mistake with this purchase but when i team my roaster with my dual recto at shows its crushing.

I should also note im running KT77S in it which really helped alot to but my 6l6 stock ones sounded great also .
 
You can't use your effects loop like that, the Master also governs the amount of output from the effects send.
 
my loop has a eq and delay going through it the rest of my effects seperate ,but the loop seems to be workin fine,like the output it isnt grainy or distorted and i still get a lush sound out of my delay.But mainly i posted this to help those ppl who maybe arent running a loop
 
I've tried diming the master on my Rectoverb, and everytime it sounds like a$$ unless the gain is really low (well below noon). The clipping is totally unmusical to me... I tend to run the channel master around 10:00-11:00 depending on the mode (Modern vs Vintage). I don't dime the gain, but for metal tones I run it up around 2:00-3:00. Perhaps the circuits are different in a Roadster vs a Rectoverb?

ya when i did it by the manual they said to put the gain to higher than 3 oclock which i thought was hilarious what high gain amp needs to be that high lol.I know what you mean by clipping and so forth i dont get any of that i am pretty anal about my tone.I guess different strokes .
 
I'm a new Roadster owner of about a week now and I've been trying to get some different guitarists' tones dialed in. I just tried your recommendation and it did have some usefulness. I tried the master volume at 3:00 and higher and the gain from 12:00 and lower. it gave it a lot more clarity, but a lot less gain.

for something very distorted, like old Metallica, I've found 3 basic ways:
1. your way: volume around 3:00-4:00 and gain around 12:00
2. volume around 9:00 and gain around 3:00
3. volume and gain both in the neighborhood of 12:00

they all get *close*, but none of them are perfect. I wish there was a way to get the best out of all of them and nail it down perfect.

I'll say though, using your recommendation on channel 3 Vintage has gotten me closer to the Jerry Cantrell/Alice In Chains sound than I've been able to get so far.

I've also been trying hard to get a good Lynyrd Skynyrd/ZZ Top/ACDC sound. I'm convinced they're somewhere in Channel 2 Brit and I get close, but the channel/mode is too **** spiky in the treble.

that's my biggest complaints so far:
1. Channel 2 Brit has a GREAT amount of "honk", but is way too brittle and spiky
2. Channels 3 and 4 sounds like there's a heavy blanket over it if you try to get too distorted and if you want to get rid of the "blanket", you give up the gain.

The gain being higher than 3 o'clock might work for modes that are lower in gain...

Also, with my Roadster, I usually have both the master and output cranked, and I prefer that way it seems...

Love the Brit mode, and I reckon the top end is what represents the more vintage type of Marshall tone, where it's mostly just that upper midrange spike that cuts you thru the mix. As for the channel 3 and 4 problem, you might want to try different preamp valves. I recommend you check out those Mesa SPAX7 preamps...
