Here is my thing....I use a Roadking one and I use eventide stompboxes in the serial loop, (my parellel loop is damaged) I got both my cleans are kinda...frumpy with gain and midrange. I have done everything from lowering my neck pickups to blasting loud levels to make the tubes sing.

I have new tubes pre and power tubes all...but the RK 1 is not doing it for me in the clean dept and I need that crystal clean sound for my gig.

Im about ready to give Randall a look, should I trade the RK 1 in for a Roadster?

I also have a triple rectifier which has better cleans but it is way too loud so far

I love the dirty sound but do I need a RK1 when I could get a Roadster?

please Jdurso hear me!

I'd trade for the Roadster. Stay with Mesa, what other amp can get you a fixed bias and as many tonal varieties in one amp? If you can live without the progressive linkage, and still need the slow, recto grind, along with amazing cleans to boot, the Roadster is your amp! Believe me, I have been searching for months now, trying out all Peavey's, Bogner Shiva, Orange Rocker/Thunderverbs, and some other Mesa's. The Roadster is beautiful tonally, and very articulate. It is just pure Mesa tone, all in all. Go for it! My only suggestion in getting the Roadster is to use the setting in the manual as a guide to getting your own tone! Happy rockin'!

Why not take it in and have it looked at? You said there is something wrong with the effects loop?

Yea I should but our gig schedule is busy ...lol its maddening but I see that the more I turn up the cleans onstage, I would try leaving the masters at 10 and the gains at 2 with the treble at 12, bass at 2 or 3 mids at 9 and presence all the way up. I still get that frump sound.

I think I will consider trading it in for a roadster (which has better cleans) I guess I would miss the el 34 options

ok, the first series of Roadkings have horrible cleans. ask any experienced player. even the higher beings at Mesa noticed, because they completely changed the cleans on both the Roadster and the Roadking Series II to Lonestar cleans, which sparkle.

your best bet is to trade for a Series II Roadking or a Roadster. If you want all the techy stuff and have about $3000, go with the Roadking II. The roadster is basically a simplified Roadking II, but about $1000 cheaper.

Went and played a Roadster at GC....wasn't that impressed with the dirty lol..the cleans are nicer for sure but what if I adjusted my parellel loop to assign to the cleans with a EQ or something?
I really love this amp and I would hate to lose the laboratory in the back on the RK1 for the simplified RK2

I don't quite get it....you say you like your triple recto cleans....even the Road King 1 was said to have better cleans than the average recto.

Also, in my experiences, the triple really isn't that much louder than a dual rectifier...50 watts difference takes more to headroom than volume.

Sounds like something might be wrong with your roadking...especially if something has gone already. Your statements just don't add up in my mind.

Best of luck!

Yea Im a scatter brain when the tone goes sour so sorry bout that confusing path. It turned out that my un used RK "loop 2" was turned up all the way and now I turned it down all the way and the cleans sound much better so this thread was a wild goose chase.

sorry everyone,

kon
