I've been searching for a great amp that can cover all of my band's needs. I've been through about 10 amps in the last year and none of them have really been versatile enough for me to settle in and get comfortable with.
My band plays all original music ranging in styles from Zappa to Rush to Incubus to early Maiden (Powerslave and before).
We have lots of clean parts, jazzy parts, and super heavy parts all rolled into our songs.
I can mod just about any amp to do just about anything I want, but I always find myself wanting more. Can't stop fiddling with the amp and just play.....
I've had my eyes on a Roadster or Mark V but both of them are very hard to find on Maui. Nobody wants to part with them if I do find one!
I just picked up a Mark IV combo that needed some work. It is a great amp, but just not heavy enough for me.
I find that I am way more of a Recto guy than a Mark guy. I love the single note tones I get out of my Mark IV and my DC-5, but always find myself wanting the Recto crunch that these amps just can't get.
I could buy a Triple Wreck pedal, but it's $300. Plus, I don't want my main sound to always come from a pedal. I know myself well enough to know that I will always be bothered by the fact that it's a Recto in a can.
There is a Roadking I combo (yeah I know it's heavy, I have worked on it) here on Maui. It has the Wine Buggy Whip Taurus color with wicker grill, looks really sharp!
The guy wants $1,500 for it. I am wondering if he will take $1,300 cash. It has a couple of broken switches on the back. I bought the replacement parts from Mesa about a year ago but the guy never came to get the work done. I won't feel bad about offering less money, it cost $30 just to ship 2 mini switches from Petaluma!
I don't need Lonestar cleans. I've had both Lonestars, they are nice, but I can live without that type of clean if the cleans on the RK I are at least as good as the Tremoverb or Rectoverb.
I do need versatility, good cleans, and Recto distortion.
I am thinking that I will set the amp up in the following way:
Clean 1
Gritty Clean for Bluesy type leads
Vintage Recto Rhythm
Heavy - kick you in the teeth - Rhythm
I will be using either an Amp Gizmo or GCX to control it with a Ground Control Pro and a G-Major II.
