Its annoying that people assume that Clean means rhythm and lead means overdrive/distortion.
Even neck pickups are often called "Rhythm" and the bridge pickup called "lead".
Of course you play anything on any pickup.
I know some people play rhythm clean and then jump into distortion for a solo, and if you are the only guitarist in the band you might have to play some rhythm strumming clean and then go for an overdriven solo, but not everyone does.
I play at the same volume whether I am using clean, crunch, or overdrive, And I play solos clean all the way through crunch to overdrive, it makes no difference, the rhythm guitar whether it be a riff or strumming comes from the "rhythm guitarist" and that sound could be anywhere from clean to overdrive, infact I play "lead" clean most of the time, so thats the rhythm channel, because "lead" seems to mean overdrive, :x HA HA!!
