Ok i want to retube my series 1 rectoverb with just stock mesa tubes for the power tubes id just use the 6l6 str-440 right?
But for preamp tubes what do i use do i just use 5 12ax7 or do i have to use different tubes in different areas? I play mainly metal so id like to get as much gain out of the preamp as possible. Ive never retubed an amp before completly new to it any help is much appreciated.
Thank you

Yes, 6L6 STR 440s. You need to get a matched pair. Just so you know, Mesa Tubes are just rebranded tubes from different manufactures. So if you want 440s you could also get a set of TAD 6L6s, or if you wanted 430s (My preference) are Sovteks.

All 5 preamp tubes are 12ax7s. V1 is the most important as this is the start of your tone, where the others controls gain, tone, etc... Ive been told that for V1 it is best to use a Tung-sol. As for the rest JJs or EHX are the most common choices for high gain.

So just any 12ax7s will do they dont have to be rated to work with a mesa or anything, im completly new to this?
Also wheres the best place to buy tubes?

From what I understand, any 12AX7 should be fine. But the quality of the sound will be impacted by the quality of your tubes.

I dont think you can go wrong with Electro Harmonix or JJs ECC83s.

Ive order all my tubes from thetubestore.com and they've been great. Fast shipping (mind you im just a few hours away), good prices, and great customer services. I believe others order from there as well.

Ok so should i mix and match the preamp tubes or should i just buy 5 of the same, whats the best way to go about it. I went to thetubestore.com and i like the sound of the tung-sol preamp tubes.
