Hiya! I've been a long time lurker on the forum...first time poster.

I'm entering the world of Mesa Boogie for the first time ever with a rectoverb 25 head. My issue is that I can't afford a Mesa cab. Its just out of my price range.

My problem is every time I find a cab/speaker that I like and is in my price range ($200-300), it's 16 ohms. I read that 16 ohms would be a 'safe mismatch' with this head. I'm still concerned that I'll be causing damage and/or losing sound quality or volume if I use a 16 ohm cab.

Anyone here run their mini rec or rectoverb heads through a 16 ohm cab? Would you recommend it for a person in my situation?

I have only one experience with this kind of situation. I owned a Laney Ironheart with matching cab, and the very first gig with it, I connected to the 8 ohm out to the 16 ohm cab.

The whole night I spent thinking, "WTF is wrong with this piece of sh**?". It sounded dark, and lifeless. I couldn't wait till that show was over!

I discovered my mistake at teardown. The amp was traded the next day anyway. The point is, it was a safe mismatch, but to my ears, it sounded terrible. I'd hold out for the right cab.

Check pawn shops, local craigslist, guitar center's used gear site. They're out there.

Excellent advice, thank you!

I'm thinking of grabbing a cheaper cab and replacing the speaker with a vintage 30. Should work out.
