i was just wondering since i'm considering getting a recto preamp how they work. Would you just run the pre through your interface and then into your computer for recording? Thanks!

I run mine always through a cabinet simulator first and the results are breathtaking in my opinion. The recording circuit doesn't really emulate the cabinet but does an exceptional job of emulating the power amp to cabinet interaction.

With that configuration, it's a toss up whether I prefer to record with that or the full blown RKII miked cabinet route. Not taking into account of course that the RKII offers reverb, choice of power tubes and more pre amp circuit choices.
 
When I do DI recording I use a software cab emulator (Amplitube 2), but yeah, same thing, these are by far the best results I have heard for silent recording. It's not quite as good as miking a good cab at proper volume in a good room after careful mic placement, but you don't need a carefully placed mic, cab, room, or volume, either :)

And, seriously, you will never notice the difference in a mix. In a lot of ways the Rec Pre is much easier to work with in a mix than a mic'd track.

Remember that Ch2 is pretty much exact same as a DR, so the same things apply-- if you want a really, really smooth lead sound or a super-tight Engl-style chunk you'll want some kind of upper-mid-focused OD pedal in front.
 
o and you can also just throw this in front of a poweramp and use it for live situations right?
 
hell yeah.

I have mine racked with a 20/20 but I also discovered that it sounds wicked going into the fx return of my MkIII.
 
would a 20/20 suffice for metal? keep in mind i play suff like trivium, devildriiver and unearth.
 
I honestly don't know... with the 20/20 pushed to clip you get awesome cut in the mix compared to a normal recto, but the low end isn't that huge. A lot would depend on the cab and speakers, but if you want to crush people's chests you would probably want an EL34 or 6L6-based power amp instead.
 
I can't say for sure, I haven't used other Mesa poweramps much. I have used a couple Marshall ones and wasn't crazy about them because I don't like EL34 cleans.
 
I don't have enough experience with other power amps... I'd be talking outta my a$$ if I recommended another one to you.

Sounds killer!

I also have done some direct recording into Digidesign OO2R with good results to. 8)
 
do you think there's anything else i get that would affect tone in recording? Ive already got the perfect computer for it(MAC ALL THE WAY!) and an interface, and my friend is giving me amplitube 2.

Try it like that first and work from there, buying stuff before you really know you need it is a big waste of time. The best thing about that setup is that you can practice on a real high-gain tube amp as much as you want.

I wouldn't recommend a 20/20 unless you can try one out first. If you're playing heavy stuff the 20/20 is good if you are doing lots of leads, shredding, or want to really cut in the mix. It would probably be good for classic thrash or NWOBHM because the tone is really tight, mid-y and in-your-face at a bearable (but still loud) volume, and is smooth if you want to solo. If you are doing more modern super-chunky stuff the bottom end just isn't there.
 
I've been recording a cd with my recto preamp, and have loved the results. The first 70% of the guitar tones were used by having the preamp going into my 50/50 and then into a mesa or marshall cab- the last 30% have been using the preamp into my engineers di boxes, either clean or with an eventide in the chain. I've loved both methods, and have gotten spacious cleans and chunky cruntches too- but it's definately not metal so I can't really speak to that world. I love the 50/50 with it outside the studio too, but really want to pair it with a recto 2:100 power amp in order to access the ultra heavy modern mode on the recto preamp. 8)
