Hi there

Please can someone help.

I've got 2 x 12 recto cab that i'd like to connect to my tremoverb 2x12 combo.

What ohm socket do i plug it in to?

Should i leave the combo speakers plugged in to the same socket?

cheers

Nick

Its fine to run an extension cab with the combo speakers, to get the best performance match up the ohms of the cab (should be on the back of the cab) with the appropriate jack and you're good to go.

Mesa's arn't that sensitive to ohm mismatches so almost nothing you do will kill the amp.

I would guess that your combo and cab are both 8 ohms. Plug the combo speakers into the 4 ohm output and plug your cab into the other 4 ohm output. This will give you a proper impedance.

+1

The 4 Ohm jacks are in parallel, two 8 Ohm loads in parallel is 4 Ohms total.

Your owners manual explains how to connect two 8 Ohm loads correctly.

While this is an unfavorable mis-match (not the best performance match), it shouldn't hurt the amp. You will be presenting a 4 Ohm load to the 8 Ohm tap on the Output Transformer, overworking it and the Powertubes.

Except maybe running the amp with no speaker load at all...... you'll fry the OT for sure.

Alternately, you can also disconnect the combo speaker altogether and connect your 212 cab to the 8 ohm outlet of the combo (where your combo speaker was previously connected).

This would allow you to hear how your amp sounds just using your 212 recto cab. Essentially your combo would be acting as a head through your recto cab. I have recently done this with my MkV combo through my 212 recto cab with interesting results.

Whatever you do be sure there is proper speaker load connected to your combo prior to turning it on......as others have mentioned.

I think where folks are getting confused is with the markings on the back of the amp. They need to understand that those numbers represent the 'load' seen by the amp - not how many different cabinets you can plug in at one time of various ohm ratings.

Like Dom said - 2 8-ohm cabinets present a 4 ohm load to the amp when used in parallel - so you use the 4 ohm jacks.

Many thanks for all this info..REALLY appreciated :)

So.. my t-verb combo has got 2 x 8ohm speakers - together they connect to the 4 ohm socket on the chassis?

My recto cab has 2 16 ohm speaker that appear to be wired series? so whilst my combo speakers is connected as above - i guess the cab is plugged in to the 8 or 16 ohm socket?

The combo is a 94 and the cab is of the same era...leather recto 2 x 12 cab. Both from Rocky Road in london..back in the day :)

Please don't take offense - This is tough because you don't seem to be quite sure about how your speakers are wired.............

Let's start with these questions.........

Do you have access to a good digital ohm meter?

How many output jacks are on the back of your amp and how are they marked?

Is the ohm rating written on the internal speakers?

Which jack are the internal speakers normally (from the factory) plugged in to?

What marking is on the cabinet? Does it say how many ohms it is?

Why do you think the speakers in the cabinet are 16 ohm?

Why do you think the speakers in the cabinet are wired in series? The reason I ask is that if they are indeed wired in series the cabinet would be rated at 32 ohms if they are 16 ohm speakers which would be unusual.

I promise that I can help you here if you can provide this information :)

OK - I read the Tremoverb manual online and I was able to answer some of my own questions

Your jacks look like: 16 ohm 8ohm 8ohm 4ohm 4ohm

And the combo has (2) 16 ohm 12" speakers wired in parallel to give a load of 8 ohms.

So, in 'factory' form your internal speakers should have been plugged into 1 of the 8 ohm jacks.

Now lets move on to the cabinet.

It's very important to know how those speakers are wired (series or parallel) and what the ohm rating is on each speaker.

Can you get that info?

Thanks,
Chris

If it helps at all, when I owned a T-verb combo for a short period I had the same questions.

I contacted Mesa, and they indicated to me to have the Combo speakers in on 8ohm and my Recto 2x12 in the other 8ohm. Or I could run in the 4ohm jacks. My choice. They assured me it would not adversely affect the amp as long as the cab was still factory wired. Both are safe matches. The manual should indicate this as well. Not saying to RTFM, but that is what Mesa pointed out to me.

If you're still not sure, contact Mesa, and they will be happy to verify for you.
