I am getting ready to track guitars for my bands demo...

I have an SM57 and a Sennheiser e609... I know it took me a lot of time to figure out mic placement to record my previous amp and I am kind of trying to eliminate that excess time in my sessions.

Any thoughts on mic placement here? I needed both mics to make my old rig sound good recorded, (Fender Metalhead) and I did a quick test run yesterday with just the 57 on the recto cab and it was missing a lot of the character that the 609 picks up... but maybe I just had the 57 in a bad place.

Give me some cool ideas!

Please.

I use PG57 in front of the speaker exactly in center of speaker with aprox. 10-15 cm distance of grill cloth. It makes nice huge fat tone ala Testament {btw they use PG57}.
I`ve tryed SM57 in the same position - no way.It makes bloody fizzy sound as cheap amp simulator does.I`ve tryed to move it aprox. 5 cm of centre line to right {or left if you want} when sound gets shape. You can move it closer to speaker to get some more agression.Good idea you can turn cab against the wall when distance between cab and wall is 1m set mic as above.Turn master volume on 10 o`clock or more....

try between the inner and outer part of the cone...the middle connection part.

Exactly right. Put the SM57 right there and as close as you can get to the grille without touching.

Each speaker has a different sound too, however the bottom 2 usually sound better.

Make sure you have a good mic preamp! I've been struggling with recording and have basically changed everything except my mic preamps in the Firepod I use, and after upgrading to something better, I've gotten incredible sounds!

Try an SM57. Put it directly on the cone, about an inch off the grill. Then, move it off about an inch to the side. That should be a great starting point.

I would use both mics on the cab. Use the 57 to pick up some clarity and sizzle, and use the 609 to capture your chunk and girth. Combine them together during mixdown and viola...

Mic positioning-wise, I would keep the 57 in towards the center of the speaker where more high upper mids and high end is produced, and place the 609 more towards the outer part of the speaker cone which is where most of your low mids and bass are found. You can experiment by keeping the mics in the same position and rotating them towards the center of the speaker or towards the outer parts.
